Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, TX - The Texas Stars unleashed a barrage of shots all night long, but Toronto goaltender Jussi Rynnas stopped all 31 he faced and Leo Komarov tallied two goals as the Marlies defeated the Stars 3-0 Friday night at Cedar Park Center.
After a physical start to the opening period from both teams, Leo Komarov began the scoring for the Marlies at 14:01. Komarov fired a wrist shot off of a rebound past Stars goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp into what appeared to be a dislodged net to take a 1-0 lead. Officials determined the goal was knocked off the moorings by a Stars player and so the goal stood. The Stars outshot the visitors 10-4 and generated a few excellent scoring chances during the frame's only power play, but went into intermission trailing by a goal.
Texas applied relentless pressure in front of the Toronto net to begin the second period, but couldn't find a way to even the score. Nilstorp made a couple of critical saves on a penalty kill midway through the session to keep the deficit at one. Later in the period a high-sticking double minor committed by Patrik Nemeth proved costly for the Stars as the Marlies extended their advantage to 2-0 on Komarov's second goal of the contest. Komarov beat Nilstorp at 15:20 with a one-timer when a centering pass deflected off of Maxime Fortunus' skate and Texas headed into the locker room down two goals despite having the upper hand in shots 17-12.
After a scoreless opening half of the third, Marlies captain Ryan Hamilton tallied a breakaway power play goal at 13:04 to widen the gap to 3-0 and give Toronto some extra breathing room. The Stars were unable to spoil Rynnas' shutout bid despite putting up 14 shots in the final period, while only allowing five shots against, and the Marlies closed out the 3-0 road victory.
Stars goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp was handed the loss, stopping 14 -of-17 shots, while Toronto starter Jussi Rynnas turned aside all 31 shots he faced to earn the shutout. Texas ouot-shot the Marlies 31-17 and went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Toronto went 2-for-4 with the man advantage.
