
Toronto Marlies Look To Extend Three-Game Winning Streak

Opponents This Week:
(Nov. 26 & 30): The Marlies play the Rochester Americans twice this week, Wednesday morning and Sunday afternoon. The Marlies power play has scored six times in two games against the Amerks so far this season. Kris Newbury leads the way with six points (two goals, four assists) through two games. The Marlies downed the Americans last Wednesday, 5-2, with Jeremy Williams scoring two power play goals, including the game-winner. Rochester currently ranks seventh in the North Division with a 2-15-0-1 record for five points. Michal Repik and Kenndal McArdle pace the way for the Amerks with nine points each and Toronto native, Michael Duco leads the team with five goals. Duco ranks fourth in the AHL with 83 penalty minutes. Panthers prospect Kenndal McArdle was drafted in the first round (20th overall) by Florida in the 2005 Entry Draft. Shawn Matthias, a Mississauga-native, was originally drafted in the second round (47th overall) by Detroit in the 2006 Entry Draft, has three goals and one assist in 18 games with Rochester. Matthias helped lead Canada to a 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship Gold Medal, scoring five points in the tournament. Former Vancouver Canucks defenceman Rory Fitzpatrick is the captain of the Amerks.
(Nov. 28): The Marlies face the Syracuse Crunch - AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets - on Friday night for the first time since the second round of the 2008 Calder Cup playoffs. The Marlies defeated the Crunch in Game 7, advancing to the Western Conference Finals. This will be the first of eight meetings between the Marlies and Crunch this season. Syracuse currently ranks third in the North Division with a 13-6-0-1 for 27 points through 20 games. They are 7-1-0-0 on home ice so far this season and 6-3-0-1 in their past 10 games. Mike York leads all Crunch players with 17 points (three goals, 14 assists) and Clay Wilson has a team-high seven goals. Jon Mirasty ranks first on the Crunch and second in the AHL with 96 penalty minutes. Nikita Filatov was selected sixth overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and scored his first career NHL goal in his first game on Oct. 17 versus Nashville. Filatov played for Russia in the 2008 World Jr. Championships. He tallied nine points in seven games and helped lead Russia to a bronze medal.
(Nov. 29): The Marlies play their third of eight meetings against the Lake Erie Monsters - AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche - on Saturday night in Cleveland, Ohio. The Monsters have beaten Toronto in their first two match-ups so far this season, including most recently, 3-0 on November 1 at Ricoh Coliseum. The Monsters currently sit in sixth place in the North Division with a 6-9-0-2 record for 14 points. Brian Willsie paces the Monsters with 14 points (eight goals, six assists) and Jesse Boulerice has a team-high 51 penalty minutes. Last season the Marlies owned a 6-1-0-1 record against Lake Erie. Pogge started seven of the eight meetings last season, earning a record of 5-1-1 with a 2.54 goals-against average. Darryl Boyce scored the Marlies first shorthanded goal of the season in their first matchup of the season on Sunday, October 12.
MARLIES HEADLINES:
Leading The Pack: Kris Newbury has potted 17 points over the past 14 games for the Marlies. During that stretch, he's scored five goals and added 12 assists. Newbury currently ranks first on the team in points, assists (tie), and plus/minus (plus-three) and third in penalty minutes. Nine of his 12 assists have come on the man-advantage, ranking fourth (tie) in the AHL. Newbury is the Marlies all-time leader in points (156), goals (55), assists (101), penalty minutes (427) and shorthanded goals (tie) with five.
Special Teams: Power Play: The Toronto Marlies power play has clicked for five goals in their past three games. Toronto's power play currently ranks eighth in the AHL with a 19.4% success rate. Their power play on the road ranks first overall at 26.8%. They've scored at least one power play goal in six of eight road games. The Marlies have registered five, multi-power play goal games so far this season. Kris Newbury and Jeremy Williams lead all Marlie skaters with 10 power play points. Williams has seven power play tallies and Newbury has nine assists.
Penalty Kill: The AHL`s best penalty kill during the 2007-08 season, is a solid 49-for-54 (90.7%) killing penalties on home ice so far this season. Toronto has successfully killed off their previous 54 of 59 penalties (two goals coming on a 5-on-3 advantage). Through 16 games, they rank second in the league with an 89.4% success rate. They've given up only 10 power play goals in 16 games. The Marlies have only allowed power play goals four of their past nine games. Darryl Boyce potted the Marlies first shorthanded tally of the season against Lake Erie on Oct. 12 to knot the game at 3-3 late in the third period. Alex Foster set a Marlies franchise record last season with five shorthanded goals.
Free Willy: Jeremy Williams has scored five goals in his past four games, all coming on the man-advantage. He ranks tied for second in the American Hockey League with seven power play goals and is first on the Marlies with eight goals. Williams is third on the team with 10 points. He is currently the Marlies all-time leader with 15 and ranks second in team history with 22 power play tallies.
Money In The Bank: Adam Munro shutout the Binghamton Senators on Friday night for his first shutout in a Marlies uniform. Munro made 25 saves in the victory and improved his record to 2-1-0 and has a 2.02 goals-against average and 0.924 save percentage. He is the first Marlies goalie to earn a shutout on the road since Justin Pogge on October 27, 2006 in Grand Rapids.
Boom Goes The Dynamite: Joseph Boumedienne has recorded an assist in each of the past four games. The 6'1, 200- pound defenceman has notched four points in eight games this season. He ranks tied for second on the Marlies defence with four assists.
Devo Time: Andre Deveaux recorded his first career AHL hat trick on Sunday, October 26 vs. Houston with two goals coming on the power play. Deveaux currently ranks second on the Marlies with six goals. His four goals on the power play this season ranks second on the team. He is first on the team with 54 penalty minutes. Deveaux ranks fifth on the Marlies in points with eight (six goals, two assists). Last season in 66 games, Deveaux scored a career-high, seven goals. He won the Calder Cup as a member of the Chicago Wolves and ranked eighth in the AHL with 232 penalty minutes.
Multi-Point Games: Kris Newbury has tallied four, three-point games so far this season. The Marlies all-time leading point scorer, notched three points (one goal, two assists) on Nov. 19 at Rochester and two-points (two assists) on Nov. 21 at Binghamton. Newbury had a three-point night in his previous trip to Rochester on October 31st , recording all three points while on the power play. He recorded three assists on Wed., Oct. 22 vs. Hamilton and tallied two goals and one assist, including the game-winning goal on Sat., Oct. 18 vs. Hartford. The only other players to record three-point nights are Andre Deveaux (three goals) and Jeremy Williams (two goals, one assist). Also this season, Jaime Sifers, Tim Stapleton, Stefano Giliati, Alex Foster, Brent Aubin, Mark Bell, Boyd Devereaux Darryl Boyce, Richard Petiot, Staffan Kronwall and Jeremy Williams have all notched two-point games.

Making Their Debut: The Marlies have dressed eight new players through their first 16 games this season. Defencemen Richard Petiot, Andy Schneider, Juha Uotila and Josef Boumedienne; forwards Andre Deveaux, Tim Stapleton and Mark Bell have all seen action in at least one game for the Marlies. Adam Munro made his Marlies debut on Sunday, October 19 in a relief effort, backing up Justin Pogge. Munro made 16 saves in the effort. Newcomer, Tim Stapleton scored the Marlies first goal of the 2008-09 season in the third period and also scored in the shootout on Friday night against the Binghamton Senators.
Unveiling the Banner: The Marlies opened up the 2008-09 season by unveiling their North Division championship banner from the year before. The Marlies won their division with a 50-21-3-6 record for 109 points, nine more points then next closest Syracuse (100 points). Toronto has 15 current players that helped them to their title berth on the opening day roster.
Reading Report: The Toronto Maple Leafs ECHL affiliate, the Reading Royals currently rank sixth in the American Division with a 5-10-0-1 record for 11 points. Dan Rudisuela ranks third (tie) on the Royals 10 points (five goals, five assists). Tyler Doig ranks second on Reading with seven assists. Patrick Wellar currently ranks third on the team with 43 penalty minutes and has collected three assists. James Reimer has appeared in four games for Reading and has earned a record of 2-1-0. Maple Leafs prospect, Michael Ouzas who is currently playing for the Fresno Falcons (ECHL) has a record of 4-2-1 with a 2.10 goals-against average and 0.931 save percentage.
MARLIES QUICK HITS:
- Kris Newbury leads the team with 17 points (five goals, 12 assists). Tim Stapleton ranks second on the Marlies with 15 points (three goals, 12 assists). Jeremy Williams ranks third on the team in points with 10.
- Newbury leads the team with a plus-three rating. Andre Deveaux leads the team with 54 penalty minutes.
- Andre Deveaux has scored a goal in four of his past nine games and is second on the team with six tallies. He is currently serving a four-game suspension. Last season with the Chicago Wolves, he scored seven goals and added 11 assists in 66 games and also went on to help the team win the Calder Cup.
- Tim Stapleton has recorded six points over his past three games (two goals, four assists).
- Former Toronto Marlies forward, John Mitchell registered his fourth assist of the season on Saturday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. In 15 games this season with the Leafs, Mitchell has recorded two goals and four assists.
- The Marlies host the Rochester Americans on Wednesday morning at 11:30 a.m. at Ricoh Coliseum for their D.A.R.E. school day game. The Marlies hit the road again on Friday when they travel to Syracuse to play the Crunch at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday night they battle the Lake Erie Monsters in Cleveland, Ohio at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Marlies host the Americans for the second time in five days in a Sunday afternoon tilt at Ricoh Coliseum.
- The Marlies currently rank fifth in the North Division with a 7-7-0-2 record for 16 points through 16 games. This upcoming week they play four divisional opponents, two on the road and two at Ricoh Coliseum.
- The Marlies won the North Division last season with a record of 50-21-3-6 for 109 points. The 109 points set a Maple Leafs affiliate record.
RBK/AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE
For the week ending November 23, 2008, the Toronto Marlies nominated centre Tim Stapleton for consideration as the Rbk/AHL Player of the Week. The La Grange, Illinois native registered multi-point games in all three Toronto victories this past week. On Wednesday night in Rochester he scored the game-winning goal, and added an assist. Two nights later against the Binghamton Senators he notched another two assists, both coming on the power play in the Marlies 3-0 win. Back at home on Saturday, Stapleton chipped in with a goal and an assist. In three games this week, he post two goals and four assists, had a plus-three rating and fired 10 shots on goal.
IN THE BOOTH:
The Marlies and Rogers Cable TV announced their 29 game broadcast schedule, which will comprise of Friday, Saturday and Sunday home dates. The television play-by-play duties will be handled by the voice of the Marlies, John Bartlett, who returns for his fourth season with the organization. Former NHLer and Toronto Maple Leaf, Bob McGill, will join Bartlett in the booth for all 29 games.
The Marlies announced on Friday, October 10 in conjunction with the FAN 590, that all 80 regular season games will be live on the FAN 590. Marlies play-by-play announcer, along with colour commentator, Bob McGill will provide the live action for Marlies fans this season. Recap: The Marlies snapped a five-game winless streak with their first win since their last visit to Rochester, 5-2. Jeremy Williams opened the scoring with his first of two goals on the evening. Boyd Devereaux added to the Marlies lead with his second goal in the past two games. After Rochester made it 2- 1, Tim Stapleton scored his first goal since opening night. Williams notched his second power play goal of the night to give Toronto a 4-1 advantage going into the third period. Kris Newbury scored his fifth goal of the season eight minutes into the third period, giving him a three-point night. The Amerks would add a late goal to make the final 5-2. Justin Pogge made 26 saves on 28 shots to pick-up his 49th career victory.

Recap: The Marlies ended their road trip with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Binghamton Senators on Friday night. Jeremy Williams opened the scoring on the power play mid-way through the first period on a one time shot after he received a pass from Kris Newbury. Williams scored his seventh power play tally of the season on an identical one timer, again after receiving a pass from Newbury. Two minutes later Staffan Kronwall slapped home his second goal of the season while the Marlies were on a 5-on-3 advantage. The Marlies out-shot the Senators 32-16 after two periods. Adam Munro stood tall in the third period, earning his first shutout of the season and first in a Marlies uniform, turning aside 25 shots.

Toronto Holds Off Penguins For Third Straight Win

Recap: The Marlies continued their winning ways on Saturday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum with a 3-2 victory over the Penguins. Mark Bell got it started with his third of the year. Josef Boumedienne fired a shot from the point that was blocked, but went to Bell who fired it past Penguins starting goalie Dave Brown. Boumedienne extended his point streak to four games. Tim Stapleton added to the Marlies lead early in the third period with his third of the season. After the Pens made it 2-1, Jiri Tlusty responded at the 14:02 mark with his first of the season. Tlusty's goal proved to be the game winner as the Marlies downed the Penguins 3-2. Justin Pogge made 33 saves in the win.
