Academy Notes

Toronto FC 97/98 Academy squad will travel to South Africa to participate in the Future Champions Gauteng 2014 International Tournament. They depart March 19 and return March 31. They will first fly into Cape Town for training and friendly matches from March 19-23. They depart on March 23 from Cape Town to Johannesburg, and the tournament begins on March 24.

MLSE Team Up Challenge presented by Ford (Sunday, June 22, 2014)

The MLSE Team Up Challenge is a completely unique tri-sport tournament, with teams of eight to ten players competing in basketball, soccer and ball hockey at BMO Field. To compete in the tournament, teams must reach a minimum fundraising target of $5,000. All funds raised through pledges and donations will help send children who are battling cancer and their families to Camp Trillium.

Last Week:

- Toronto FC opened the 2014 MLS Season with a 2- 1victory over the Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field. In his MLS and TFC debut Jermain Defoe scored both goals for the Reds. He gave Toronto FC a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, courtesy of a Jonathan Osorio pass. The England international added his second in the 24th minute as the Reds put the Sounders FC in a 2-0 hole early in the match. Seattle came within one goal courtesy of Clint Dempsey in the 68th minute. The Reds were able to hold on in the closing minutes to record just their second win over the Sounders FC in franchise history and first at CenturyLink Field.

- Major League Soccer announced Monday that Jermain Defoe has been named MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 2.

Wilmington Hammerheads FC

Toronto FC announced Monday that the club has assigned goalkeeper Quillan Roberts, along with midfielders Daniel Lovitz, and Manny Aparicio on loan to its USL Pro Club affiliate, Wilmington Hammerheads FC. Wilmington's season starts Saturday April 5 against Harrisburg City Islanders.

Look Ahead

Toronto FC will take to the field this weekend against D.C. United in their home opener. D.C. had last weekend off. D.C. is currently 0-1-0 this season. D.C. United finished 10th in the Eastern Conference with 16 points and a record of 3-24-7 last season. The Reds met D.C. United at the IMG Academy earlier this year in a pre- season friendly match where Toronto won the game by a score of 1-0. In three matches last season, Toronto FC defeated D.C. United twice and drew once. The Reds are 5-10-3 all-time against D.C.
