Toronto FC Forward Jermain Defoe Voted MLS Player of the Week
Published on March 17, 2014 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Monday, March 17, 2014) - Toronto FC forward Jermain Defoe was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for the second week of the 2014 MLS season.
In his MLS debut Saturday, Defoe scored both goals in the 2-1 victory against Seattle Sounders FC, helping Toronto start their season with a win for the first time in club history.
In the 17th minute, Toronto FC midfielder Jonathan Osorio played a through ball, which split Sounders FC defenders Djimi Traore and DeAndre Yedlin, into Defoe near the top of the box. Defoe timed his run perfectly to stay onside and slid a cool one-touch shot past Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei, scoring his first career MLS goal on his first shot attempt.
Exactly seven minutes later Defoe found the back of the net again, when Sounders FC midfielder Marco Pappa attempted a back pass to Traore and Defoe pounced on the ball in the attacking third. Defoe took two touches to the top of the box and blasted a shot past Frei to score his second MLS goal.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
