Toronto Drops Grand Rapids 4-3 in Season Opener

The Toronto Marlies defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins, AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, by a score of 4-3 in overtime this afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum.

Defenceman T.J. Brennan netted his first Marlies goal to open the scoring just over five minutes into the game. Grand Rapids would respond on Tomas Jurco's first goal of the season at 14:10. Riley Sheahan gave the Griffins their first lead of the contest with just over four minutes remaining in the period. Toronto tied the game at two on a powerplay just past the midway point of the second stanza, with T.J. Brennan netting his second tally of the day. Brennan would complete the hat trick at 16:17 of the middle period. Mitch Callahan notched his second goal of the season at 4:53 of the third period to even the game at three. In overtime, Marlies Captain Trevor Smith scored the game winning goal at 2:59 to lift the Marlies over the Griffins.

The Toronto Marlies return to the ice tomorrow evening when they host the Lake Erie Monsters, AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the team's ticket line at 416-597-PUCK (7825).
