Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators started off their 2013-2014 season with a hard fought, come from behind win against their East Division rival, the Syracuse Crunch. Cody Ceci netted the game winner in the overtime period, as the Sens battled back from a 3-1 third period deficit.
Syracuse was able to strike first after both teams played to a scoreless first period. Dana Tyrell put the Crunch on the board just 1:24 into the second period beating B-Sens goalie Nathan Lawson. Derek Grant was able to quickly pull the Sens even at one apiece just over two minutes later on a beautiful short-handed goal which beat the Crunch's Cedrick Desjardins. However, two back-to-back goals from Tyrell and Evan Rankin with less than five minutes remaining in the period put the Crunch up 3-1 heading into the locker room.
Third period possession was owned by the Senators, as they looked to get something going offensively that could get them back into the game. That something came at 6:42 into the final period on a shot by Corey Cowick, who pulled the B-Sens back within one. After Syracuse's Drew Olson was whistled for a high stick call, the B-Sens power play unit took advantage of the opportunity on a Mika Zibanejad slap shot that beat Desjardins over his right shoulder, knotting the game at three all. A few close opportunities for both teams proved to not be enough, as the third period horn sounded sending the first game of the season for both squads into overtime.
The overtime period was much like the previous three, hard hitting and very intense, as neither team was willing to let their rival take the first contest of the season. However the B-Sens seemed to have found another gear in the extra period and started to create chances to take the win. Halfway through the sudden death period Andre Petersson took a loose puck and found defenseman Cody Ceci open, who buried the puck to give the B-Sens the 4-3 victory.
Syracuse's Cedrick Desjardins stopped 35 of the 39 shots he faced in the loss. Nathan Lawson played a stellar final period and a half, making a total of 32 saves for the win. Ceci finished with a goal and an assist to earn him the number one star of the game.
The B-Sens will look to continue their strong start with three consecutive road games. Next weekend the Sens face another East Division rival, the Norfolk Admirals, both Friday and Saturday before traveling to Syracuse for a rematch on Friday, October 18. The B-Sens will return home again Saturday, October 19, when Syracuse makes the trip down interstate 81 again for a 7:05 p.m. contest. Tickets for this game are $19 for side seats and $18 for end seats. Fans can purchase tickets through the B-Sens executive office by calling (607) 722-SENS (7367), the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office, and all Ticketmaster outlets.
