CEDAR PARK, Texas - Travis Morin tied a franchise record by tallying a four-point night and Jack Campbell made 18 saves to lift the Texas Stars to a 4-1 win over the Chicago Wolves Saturday night in their season opener in front of 6,045 fans at Cedar Park Center.
The Stars opened the scoring ten minutes into the game when Travis Morin took the puck up the right side, froze the defenseman with a quick deke, and slid a beautiful pass across the slot for Colton Sceviour to one-time into a yawning net at 10:02. Defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka also tallied an assist on Sceviour's goal to record his first career AHL point in his North American pro debut. Texas dominated in shots on goal 12-5 in the first period.
Texas took advantage of their first power play of the game early in the second period to double their lead. Captain Maxime Fortunus, playing in his 700th professional game, took a pass from Morin and blasted a slap shot from the point past the blocker of Chicago goaltender Matt Clime at 5:01 for a power play goal. The strike was Fortunus' 50th in his AHL career. The Stars extended their lead ten minutes later when Travis Morin streaked in up the left side on a two-on-one and snapped wrist shot over Climie's glove and into the top right corner of the net. Morin's unassisted goal at 15:32 was answered 80 seconds later when Jani Hakanpaa's shot from the left boards redirected off Stars forward Justin Dowling and past Campbell for Chicago's only goal of the night.
The Stars again dominated in shots-on goal in the third, out-shooting the Wolves 16-4. Texas piled on another goal at 7:51 when Morin skated out from behind the net, was stuffed on his initial effort, but squeezed his own rebound between Climie and the right post for a 4-1 Stars lead. It was Morin's second goal and fourth point of the night, which equaled a Texas single-game franchise record. Sceviour and Jokipakka assisted on the goal, as each picked up their second points of the night.
Jack Campbell finished with 18 saves on 19 shots in goal for Texas to earn his first victory of the season. Matt Clime took the loss for Chicago, allowing four goals on 38 shots. The Stars out-shot the Wolves 38-19 in the game and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Chicago was 0-for-3 with the man-advantage.
Texas returns to action Sunday, October 6th at Cedar Park Center, hosting the Rockford IceHogs for a 5:00 p.m. face off.
