Syracuse Crunch News Release
Binghamton, NY - The Syracuse Crunch opened their 20th season with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Binghamton Senators at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena tonight.
Dana Tyrell scored twice and netminder Cedrick Desjardins made 35 saves as the Crunch fell to the BSens in the first of ten contests this season. Binghamton goaltender Nathan Lawson made 32 saves.
After a scoreless first period it only took 1:24 of the second for the Syracuse Crunch to find the back of the net. Tyrell threw the puck across the Senators goal line where it was deflected past Binghamton netminder Nathan Lawson. Assists on the play went to Dmitry Korobov and Evan Rankin.
Just over two minutes later Senators center Derek Grant tied the game with a shorthanded breakaway. A Crunch turnover at the blue line let Grant walk in all alone on Desjardins for the unassisted score.
The Crunch responded with their own shorthanded tally with 4:19 to play in the middle frame. Tyrell collected his own rebound after beating Lawson five-hole for his second goal of the game. Rankin extended the Crunch lead to 3-1 with 1:02 to play in the stanza. Rankin took over the puck in the crease and faked Lawson to beat him right side. Crunch Captain Mike Angelidis assisted.
The Senators struck twice in the third period to even the score at three and force overtime. Corey Cowick lifted a rebound over Desjardins at the 6:42 mark and Mika Zibanejad evened the score with a one-timer from the top of the circle 9:13 into the frame.
Binghamton defenseman Cody Ceci scored the game-winner 2:47 into the extra frame.
The Crunch host I-90 rival the Rochester Americans at the Upstate University Hospital home opener on Saturday, Oct. 12. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m. at the War Memorial Arena. Tickets are available by calling 315-473-4444.
