Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Little Falls, NJ -- Lefty Tom Cochran turned in another strong outing and Scott Grimes paced the Worcester attack with a four-hit night, as the Tornadoes salvaged the series finale in New Jersey, defeating the Jackals, 9-2, on Sunday night.

For the first time in the series, the Tornadoes scored first, striking for two 1st inning runs on a two-out, two-run double by Francisco Caraballo off Jackals righthander Tom Atlee (1-1). Worcester would go up 3-0 in the 3rd inning, using a Chris Colabello single, an error and a Chuck Jeroloman fielder's choice grounder to score an unearned run. Meanwhile, Cochran (9-0) was outstanding, tossing seven strong innings with the only blemish on his record, a one-out solo home run to leftfield by Jackals Catcher Matt Lauderdale in the 4th inning. Grimes knocked Atlee out of the game with an RBI double in the 6th and the Tornadoes put the game away against the Jackals bullpen, scoring three in the 8th (Colabello RBI single and an Alex Trezza two-run double) and two more in the 9th on Grimes' 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot. John Birtwell allowed a single run in the bottom of the 9th on two singles, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly to provide the final margin.

Cochran (9-0) allowed two earned runs or less for the eighth time in nine starts for the Win and Atlee was charged with 4 runs (3 earned) in 5+ innings to suffer the Loss. Grimes went 4-for-6 on the night from the leadoff spot, with 3 RBIs and 3 Runs Scored. Cochran now leads the league in Wins (9). The Tornadoes improved to 8-1 on Sundays in 2008. Worcester scored more runs in the game than they did in the previous three losses to New Jersey combined. The Tornadoes will look to bring momentum home with them, as they begin a six-day, five-game homestand with the first game of a three-game series against the Sussex Skyhawks starting on Monday night. Righty Matt Weagle will get the start for Worcester and he will be opposed by Sussex righthander Gary Galvez. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.

The Tornadoes return home on Monday, July 21 for a three-game series against the Sussex Skyhawks. Monday will be Guaranteed Win Night and Salsa Night. Tuesday is New England Sports Night, while Wednesday is Park & Rec Day!
