New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Worcester Tornadoes RF Scott Grimes went 4-6 with a home run and three as the Tornadoes pounded out 14 hits in support of starter Tom Cochran in a 9-2 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Sunday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium. Despite the loss, the Jackals managed to take three of four games in the series.

The Tornadoes opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning when New Jersey starter Tom Atlee allowed singles to the first two hitters he faced before LF Francisco Caraballo laced a two-run double to give Worcester a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, the Tornadoes extended their lead to 3-0 when 1B Chris Colabello scored on a fielders choice off the bat of SS Chuck Jeroloman.

The Jackals got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when C Matt Lauderdale launched his fifth home run of the season to left field to cut the Tornadoes lead to 3-1.

However, the Tornadoes would score the game's next six runs to take a commanding lead. In the sixth inning, an RBI double by Grimes gave Worcester a 4-1 advantage. The Tornadoes then added three runs in the eighth on a Colabello RBI single and a two-run double by C Alex Trezza to take a 7-1 lead. In the top of the ninth, Grimes' tenth homer of the season extended the Tornadoes advantage to 9-1.

The Jackals loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth against reliever John Birtwell and cut the Worcester lead to 9-2 on a sacrifice fly by 3B Chris Kelly, but the Jackals were unable to rally.

Cochran (9-0) remained undefeated after allowing one run on seven hits in seven innings. For the Jackals, Atlee (1-1) surrendered four runs - three earned - in five innings as he fell for the first time this season.

The Jackals enjoy an off day on Monday before returning to action on Tuesday morning at 11:05 a.m. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
