(Nashua, N.H., July 20, 2008) Pride starting pitcher Jason Paul (3-1) earned a victory in his third consecutive start, going six shutout innings, on four hits, one walk and eight strike outs, to lead Nashua over the Ottawa Rapidz, 6-2, at Historic Holman Stadium on Sunday night.
"He's (Jason Paul) been our best starter for a couple weeks now," said Pride manager Rick Miller following the game. "Last three outings have been really good and he's learned to relax out their and throw to his spots. That's what we're trying to get all our pitchers to do."
Pride reliever Mike Joyce was the first man out of the bullpen and dealt a scoreless seventh inning, while Adam Piechowski followed suit with a perfect eighth. Closer Andrew Weimer let up a pair of runs in the ninth inning while finishing the game for the Pride.
Nashua Received RBI from six different hitters in the line-up to spread a balanced twelve hit attack. Catcher Luis Rodriguez went 2-for-4 in the game with a double and an RBI, third baseman Argenis Tavarez was also 2-for-4 with an RBI, while shortstop Sandy Almonte went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
"We're getting big hits now," said Miller. "We got the big hits early... That's what I've been looking for, some clutch hits. You can never have enough (runs)"
Pride outfielders Vinny Pennell and Ervin Alcantara along with second baseman Ismael Castro also drove in runs for Nashua. First baseman Bryan Duplissie notched his league leading 20th double of the season in the game.
Rapidz starter Fraser Robinson (2-5) suffered the loss lasting five innings, giving up four runs, on nine hits, one walk and four strike outs. Reliever Jacob Ramos gave up a pair of runs on three hits out of the Ottawa bullpen in here innings of work.
Rapidz' catcher Kyle Geiger and right fielder Mike Muscato each notched RBI for Ottawa. Both Geiger and Muscato finished the game 1-for-3.
With the win the Pride move into a half share of first place in the Can-Am League second half standings with the Quebec Capitales.
The Pride will enjoy a day off on Monday before beginning a five game road trip, visiting the Brockton Rox for three games and the then the Worcester Tornadoes for a pair, starting on Tuesday. Nashua is scheduled to send Hideki Nagasaka (6-2) to the mound in to begin the series against Brockton, at 7:05pm, at Campanelli Stadium on Tuesday night.
