Worcester Tornadoes News Release

WORCESTER -- Junior Guerrero struck out a season-high nine batters, but suffered the loss, as the Tornadoes fell for the second consecutive night, 4-3, to the Quebec Capitales, Saturday evening at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. The Tornadoes scored first with a two-out RBI double by Alex Trezza in the first inning, but the Capitales quickly answered the bell in the top of the second with a run of their own on Josh Colafemina's run-scoring single. It stayed that way until the top of the fourth inning when Quebec catcher Greg Stevens stroked his eighth homer of the season to centerfield. This time Worcester was able to jump right back in the bottom of the inning, tying things up with a bases loaded, RBI fielder's choice by left fielder Josh Farkes.

The Capitales reassumed control in this back-and-forth battle with a single by Alex Nunez that scored Colafemina, who had led off the fifth inning with a walk. Nunez was 5-for-9 in the first two games of the series. Yet again the Tornadoes came right back, this time with a lead-off, solo blast to deep right field by Scott Grimes. Grimes' 15th homer of the year evened the game back up at three apiece, as he tallied three hits on the night.

Junior Guerrero (6-5) battled into the seventh inning, finishing with a line of six hits, four runs (all earned), nine strikeouts and four walks in 7.1 innings. He gave way to Ryan Lobban after a 1-out double by Mike Goss. Lobban issued a wild pitch to Geoffrey Tomlinson which allowed Goss to third base, and then Tomlinson drove him home with a sacrifice fly to right field, to give Quebec a 4-3 advantage.

Quebec starter Michel Simard (11-1) was strong, going six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, while striking out three and walking none. He was replaced by Erick Nadon, who after giving up a lead-off bunt single to Grimes in the seventh, was able to retire the next three batters in order to keep the game in the Capitales favor. Mark James pitched two perfect innings to close things out, recording his first save of the season.
