New Jersey Jackals News Release

Augusta, NJ - For the second consecutive game, the Sussex Skyhawks (13-13, 38-35) offense set the pace in Saturday evening's 8-2 victory over the New Jersey Jackals (10-16, 36-38)) at Skylands Park. With 21 games remaining in the regular season, the Jackals drop three games behind the Skyhawks in the overall standings and in the race for the fourth and final Can-Am League playoff spot. Prior to the loss against Sussex which evened up the season series at four wins each, the Jackals had previously held record of 9-2 in Saturday contests this season.

For Sussex, starter Matt Salvato (8-3) picked up the win, allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings. Salvato also notched four strikeouts while walking one. For the Jackals, right-hander Michael Vicaro (5-4) took the loss. Vicaro, who was making his first start since June 29th, surrendered four runs on six hits in six innings of work while striking out two and walking three.

In similar fashion to last night, the Jackals jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, LF Luke Allen singled to left and scored later in the frame when C Craig Maddox laced an RBI double to the gap in right center. However, the Skyhawks countered in the bottom of the third when C Yohanny Valera led off with his fourth home run of the season to tie the score at 1-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sussex 2B Chris Brown wrapped a two-run home run around the left field foul pole to extend the Skyhawks lead to 3-1.

In the fifth inning, the Jackals and Skyhawks exchanged runs. In the top of the frame, New Jersey 3B David Urias broke an 0-20 slump with a leadoff single. After CF Zack Smithlin beat out a bunt to advance Urias to second, SS Bryant Nelson singled through the right side to plate Urias and cut the Jackals' deficit to 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, Sussex played small ball to extend their lead to 4-2. CF Ron Perodin started the inning with a walk and proceeded to steal second. A fly out by SS Kevin Rios then advanced Perodin to third, before he scored on sacrifice fly off the bat of RF Jorge Moreno.

After Vicaro exited the game following the sixth inning, the Skyhawks wasted no time jumping on the Jackals' bullpen. In the bottom of the seventh, a two-run single by DH Mario Delgado extended the Sussex lead to 6-2. Then in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Skyhawks plated two more runs off Jackals right-hander Dustin Cameron. In the eighth, Cameron loaded the bases with no outs before inducing 3B Jay Yaconetti to hit into a run-scoring double play. With two outs and a runner on second, Perodin laced a run-scoring triple to the gap in right center to extend the Sussex lead to 8-2 before he was thrown out at the plate trying to score on an inside-the-park home run.

The Jackals and Skyhawks conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Ted Serro (3-2, 3.60 ERA) to the mound against Sussex righty Gary Galvez (2-5, 5.96 ERA). If you can't make it out to Skylands Park, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
