Tornadoes Avoid Sweep with 4-3 Win

August 26, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Mark Minicozzi had a two-run homer and Zach Zuercher earned his 13th victory of the season in Worcester's 4-3 win over the Pittsfield Colonials at Waconah Park Thursday night. The Colonials left the game-tying and game-winning runs on base in the ninth, as Albert Ayala earned his fourth save of the season. Zuercher and Pittsfield starter T.J. Wink waited more than two full hours to throw their first respective pitches. The game was delayed for two hours and 14 minutes, the second delay of at least that long this season. Pittsfield committed four errors, but only one of Worcester's runs was unearned. Ryan Crespi walked on four pitches, took second on a throwing error by Wink, reached third on a passed ball and came home on an error by Matt Nandin. A couple of runs came home in the third inning on Minicozzi's 13th homer of the season. The round-tripper gave the Tornadoes a 3-0 lead. The Colonials answered with a run each in the fourth and fifth, including a solo homer by Billy Mottram. In the seventh inning, each team added a run. In the top half, Chris Colabello hit a sacrifice fly to score Tony Patane. The Colonials responded with back-to-back doubles from Peter Fatse and Chris Torres. Worcester left a runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth. In the last half inning, Pittsfield left Quentin Davis on third base and Nandin on first to end the game. The Tornadoes will host the Quebec Capitales for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader at 5:05pm on Friday. Ryan Bicondoa will get the start for Worcester in game one. Pre-game coverage starts at 4:50 on USTREAM.
