PITTSFIELD, MA - The Pittsfield Colonials made dramatic comebacks in both ends of a doubleheader against the Newark Bears, coming away with a split in the two games, winning the opener 3-2 before falling in the nightcap 5-4.

The split, along with New Jersey's sweep of Brockton and Quebec splitting with Worcester leave the Colonials tied for third in the overall standings and holding a playoff spot with seven games remaining.

In game one, the Colonials trailed 2-0 into the sixth inning and were being no-hit by Newark starter Alex Smith. Leading off the seventh, Danny Bomback reached on an error. Billy Mottram delivered the first Pittsfield hit of the game into left, moving Bomback to third. On the throw to third, Mottram moved to second. Angel Molina came up and delieverd a hit the other way into rightfield, scoring both runners and tying the game at 2-2.

Pittsfield would come up in the eighth and have Matt Nandin reach on a single and moved to second on an error. After a bunt single by Quentin Davis and a strikeout, Bomback came up and drove a ball into the right-centerfield corner to bring home Nandin with the winning run.

Newark got their runs on a first inning RBI single from Caleb Stewart and a sixth inning homer by Stewart, his third of the year.

David Qualben (6-7) earned the win, coming out of the bullpen to pitch the eighth. Mikey Mehlich (1-4) took the loss.

In game two, the score was tied at 2-2 in the third inning when Danny Santiesteban singled through the left side, scoring Brandon Watson to make it 3-2 Bears. An Eric McGee homer in the fourth extended the lead to 4-2.

The Colonials came right back in the fifth inning thanks to a pair of triples by Billy Mottram and Peter Fatse, tying the game at 4-4. It would remain that way until the eighth when Newark's Caleb Stewart homered to lead off the inning for the eventual winning run.

Anthony Pluta (2-2) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Mike Zenko (6-2) took the loss for Pittsfield

Game three of the series has been moved up to a 11 a.m. first pitch on Saturday to allow the Bears to return to North Jersey in advance of Hurricane Irene. Coverage will begin with the pregame show on 89.7 WTBR FM at 10:40 a.m.
