Pittsfield Colonials News Release
LITTLE FALLS, NJ - The Pittsfield Colonials were unable to make a hot start stand up as the New Jersey Jackals took a 2-0 lead in the best of five first round playoff series against Pittsfield by virtue of an 8-2 Jackals win.
Pittsfield got off to a good start as Jerod Edmondson walked to lead off the ballgame. Two batters later, Billy Mottram hit a tailing single to left-center on which Edmondson motored to third. Chris White's throw to third was not in time to get Edmondson and allowed Mottram to move to second. The next batter Angel Molina deposited a single into right, scoring both runners for a 2-0 Colonials lead.
New Jersey countered with a run in the bottom of the inning with help from the Pittsfield defense even though no errors occurred in the inning. With Bryan Sabatella on first base and one out, Myron Leslie hit a high fly ball to left. Staring directly into the lights, Mottram lost the ball and third baseman Johnny Welch was unable to find it either as the ball dropped in for a hit. Sandy Madera followed with a single to score Sabatella to cut the Pittsfield lead to 2-1.
The Jackals would take the lead in the third on RBI hits from Sabatella and D'Angelo Jimenez to take a 3-2 lead. A Kris Sanchez homer in the fifth upped the lead to 4-2. New Jersey would tack on a run in the seventh and batted around scoring three in the eighth to cement the final.
The win went to A. J. Wideman (1-0) who tossed six innings allowing two runs on four hits. Josh Ellis earned the save with two perfect innings, striking out four. Pat Moran (0-1) took the loss for Pittsfield allowing four runs in five innings.
The Colonials will try to stave off elimination and extend their series tomorrow as David Qualben (7-7, 3.91) takes the hill for Pittsfield against Jon Kibler (3-6, 6.03) for New Jersey. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. with the pregame show on WTBR beginning at 6:15.
