Brockton Rox News Release
(Ramapo, NY) - The Rockland Boulders (16-18, 35-45) got the better of the Brockton Rox (20-16, 46-36) in an early inning slugfest in Thursday night's 8-6 series finale at Provident Bank Park.
Neither starter faired well as the Rox jumped out to a 3-0 lead by batting around in the first inning, but it was the Boulders that led 7-5 after four frames.
Freddy Flores (6-9) took his fourth straight loss, lasting three and 2/3 innings, while allowing seven runs on eleven hits and walking four. Ryan Knippschild (2-4) pitched just well enough to win, coughing up six runs on eleven hits in five and 1/3 frames, while walking three.
Chris Valencia led off the first inning with a double, igniting a rally in which Keith Brachold, Shawn Williams and Melvin Falu each knocked in a run and the Rox also stranded the bases loaded.
Rockland responded with a five run second frame, highlighted by Ray Stokes' two-run single and a two-run double from Cole Kraft.
The Rox tied the game at five, scoring twice in the top of the fourth, but that's as close as they would get. The Boulders bullpen went three and 2/3 scoreless innings and did not allow a base runner. Adrian Martin hurled a 1-2-3 ninth and struck out one on the way to a league leading 19th save.
Back-to-back RBI singles from Norm Hutchins and Cristobal Santana put the Boulders ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth and chased Flores. Santana followed with an insurance run on a sac fly in the eighth, making the score 8-6.
All nine Boulders collected at least one hit and the Rockland lineup compiled five multi-hit games. Jeremy Slayden reached base in five at-bats, going 3-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.
Phillip Cuadrado and Brachold each knocked in two runs, with Brachold going 4-for-5 and scoring once.
Valencia went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases for a league leading 38 swipes.
The Rox head to New Jersey to begin a four game series with the Jackals in Friday's doubleheader. Sunday's afternoon affair has been moved to Friday as part of two seven-inning games due to the threat of hurricane Irene. First pitch in game one is set for 4:35 p.m. as Dustin Birosak (7-1, 2.73) takes the mound against Isaac Pavlik (12-3, 2.78). Zach Woods (1-1, 1.59) gets the nod for Brockton in game two.
