Pittsfield Colonials News Release
PITTSFIELD, MA - The Pittsfield Colonials got the winning run aboard in the ninth inning, but were unable to bring him around as the Worcester Tornadoes were able to win the getaway game in their series against the Colonials 4-3 in a game that ended after midnight due to a 2:19 rain delay prior to first pitch.
Despite the loss, Pittsfield continues to hold down a playoff spot with nine games remaining thanks to New Jersey's victory over Newark.
Pittsfield pushed the Tornadoes to the brink in the ninth as Peter Fatse led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Quentin Davis replaced Fatse on a fielder's choice. With two outs and Davis on first, it appeared as if the game was about to end as Matt Nandin popped up the Albert Ayala offering to shallow right. Fighting the fog, Abraham Nunez dropped the popup, allowing Davis to take third. Jerod Edmondson came to the plate next and lifted a shallow fly ball to right. At the last second Ryan Crespi came on to make a sliding catch to save the game.
Worcester scored an unearned run in the second inning when a throwing error allowed Cam Monger to reach base and Ryan Crespi, who had led off the inning with a walk, to score for a 1-0 Tornadoes lead. A two-run homer by Mark Minicozzi in the third made the score 3-0.
Pittsfield picked up a run each in the fourth and fifth inning on a Billy Mottram homer, his 12th of the season, and a single by Matt Nandin, scoring Peter Fatse, slicing the Worcester lead to 3-2.
The two teams traded runs in the seventh; Worcester's run coming in on a sac fly by Chris Colabello. Pittsfield got it back in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back doubles by Peter Fatse and Chris Torres to make it 4-3.
The win went to Zach Zuercher (13-4) who went seven innings for the Tornadoes. T. J. Wink (4-2) suffered the loss despite giving up just two earned runs in 6.1 innings of work.
The Colonials will now take on the Newark Bears in a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 6 p.m. Miguel Flores (3-9, 4.24) and Tim Stronach (3-2, 3.42) will get the starts for Pittsfield against Alex Smith (9-2, 3.14) and Greg Lane (1-0, 2.35) for the Bears. The pregame show on WTBR FM begins at 5:40 p.m.
