Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

After an excruciating day of travel, the Albuquerque Isotopes (34-38) were still jet-lagged, dropping both halves of a doubleheader against the Memphis Redbirds (38-36) 3-1, 5-4 Wednesday afternoon at AutoZone Park. Chris Seddon threw a complete game for the Isotopes in game one but still suffered the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six. In game two, homers by Jai Miller, Dallas McPherson, and Tagg Bozied weren't enough to lift the ‘Topes to victory.

Chris Barnwell ignited the Isotopes' only offensive rally of the first game in the top of the first when he cracked a one-out double down the left field line to set up Tagg Bozied, who hit a grounder to Memphis third baseman David Freese that trickled into left for an error, allowing Barnwell to race home for Albuquerque's first and only run, 1-0.

Memphis responded in the bottom of the first when Brian Barden led off the inning with a double off the left-center field wall before Colby Rasmus lined a single up the middle to plate Barden and tie up the game at one.

With two outs in the third, Redbirds' right fielder Nick Stavinoha cracked a 1-2 offering from Seddon deep over the left field wall to give Memphis the 2-1 lead.

D'Angelo Jimenez led the fourth inning off with a single to right for Jarret Hoffpauir who lined a single to left as Jimenez dashed for third. With two men on and one out, Bryan Anderson slapped a grounder to Barnwell at short, who started the 6-4-3 double-play that was late by an eyelash at first, as Jimenez scored the game's final run, 3-1.

In game two, Albuquerque again scored the first run of the contest in the first inning, when Miller slugged the first pitch of the game over the left field fence to give the Isotopes the early 1-0 advantage.

Brian Barden led off the first inning by singling up the middle only to sprint to third on a line-drive double smacked by Colby Rasmus. With two men in scoring position, Jarrett Hoffpauir earned a walk to load the bases for Rico Washington, who with one swing of the bat cleared the bases with a towering grand slam over the right field fence, giving the Redbirds the instant three run lead, 4-1. D'Angelo Jimenez followed suit, smashing a solo homer to left to cap the explosive first inning, 5-1.

Chase Lambin drew a one-out walk in the second for pitcher Chris Michalak, who grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Lambin to sprint to second. A wild pitch thrown by Redbirds starter Clayton Mortensen sent Lambin sliding into third base only to dash home following another wild pitch for the Isotopes' second run, 5-2.

With one out in the third, McPherson slammed a first-pitch offering from Mortensen over the right field fence for his 22 home run of the season, narrowing the Redbirds lead to two, 5-3.

The Isotopes continued to chip away in their comeback attempt in the sixth when Bozied crushed a one-out solo homer over the left field fence reducing the once mighty lead to one, 5-4.

Jason Motte shut down the Isotopes bats in the top of the seventh, however, to lock down the 5-4 victory for the Redbirds and the doubleheader sweep.

The Isotopes will turn to right-hander Dallas Trahern (1-6, 6.70) to return to the win column against the Memphis Redbirds and southpaw Mark Mulder (0-2, 13.03) Thursday night at AutoZone Park, first pitch slated for 6:05 PM.

Following a quick four-game series in Memphis the Isotopes return to Isotopes Park for a weekend series against the Iowa Cubs, Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. The four-game series will have a plethora of entertainment including appearances by Birdzerk! and Myron Noodleman in addition Isotopes Magnet Schedule and Bead giveaways.
