Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Matt Antonelli hit a game-tying single in the ninth and Will Venable doubled and scored on Nick Hundley's RBI single in the 10th as the Portland Beavers rallied to beat the Tucson Sidewinders 4-3 in extra innings Wednesday night at PGE Park.
The Beavers (36-35) worked their way back from a 3-0 deficit, eventually tying the game in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single through the right side by Antonelli, who extended his hitting streak to six games by going 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.
Will Venable doubled to the corner in left with one out in the 10th and moved to third on a wild pitch before Hundley forced a single through the drawn-in infield to help the Beavers improve to 5-0 in extra innings.
Venable was 3-for-4 and Hundley, who has also hit in six straight, drove in two runs for the Beavers, who have come from behind late in each of their last four victories.
Tucson starter Yusmeiro Petit matched season highs with seven innings of work and 10 strikeouts, limiting the Beavers to a run on six hits and a pair of walks before leaving the game with a 3-1 lead.
Emilio Bonifacio and Donnie Kelly each had two hits and an RBI to lead the Sidewinders (29-45).
Dustin Glant (0-2) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to suffer a blown save and the loss, while Edwin Moreno (2-1) worked a scoreless top of the 10th for the win.
The Sidewinders got RBI singles from Kelly and Bonifacio, and Jesus Merchan, who reached on a leadoff error, scored on a sac fly as the Sidewinders took a 3-0 lead in the fifth.
Luis Rodriguez reached on a leadoff double in the bottom of the fifth and scored two batters later on Antonelli's RBI single. The Beavers later manufactured a run in the eighth to get within a run. After a single by Chip Ambres and a walk to Brian Myrow, Venable put down a successful sac bunt to put runners on second and third, and Ambres scored on an RBI groundout by Hundley.
Pinch-hitter Brett Dowdy was hit by a pitch to start the tying rally in the ninth. Dowdy moved to second on a sac bunt by Tom King and narrowly beat the throw from right field on Antonelli's single through the right side of the infield to send the game to extra innings.
The series resumes Thursday night at PGE Park in a 7:05 p.m. start. Thursday's game will be televised live on FSN.
NOTES: Bonifacio was ejected by base umpire Angel Campos in the top of the fifth after he was caught stealing to end the inning ... the Beavers teamed with KGW NewsChannel 8 and Medical Teams International to help raise funds for Myanmar relief as part of Wednesday's game ... Portland starter Josh Geer logged his seventh consecutive start with three or fewer earned runs allowed.
