Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Portland, OR - Wilkin Castillo's RBI base hit to right snapped a 3-3 tie in the eighth and the Sidewinders tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth for a 7-3 win over the Portland Beavers on Tuesday night. Castillo finished 3 for 5 and has eight RBI in his past three games.
Jamie D'Antona homered and Robby Hammock, Jesus Merchan, Phil Avlas and Matt Morgan all added RBI for Tucson. D'Antona's solo home run to left started Tucson's scoring in the second and Avlas' sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 Tucson lead.
A.J. Shappi started for the Sidewinders and gave them four innings of two run baseball in his second spot start. Shappi allowed solo home runs to Will Venable and Nick Hundley.
Portland briefly grabbed the lead with a run against Brandon Medders in the sixth but Tucson came right back to tie it in the seventh. Castillo led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Avlas. Morgan doubled over the head of Beavers left fielder Vince Sinisi to score Castillo with the tying run.
Jailen Peguero earned the win with two innings in relief. Peguero (4-2) worked around a leadoff walk in the seventh and loaded the bases on a single and two walks in the eighth but struck out Matt Antonelli to end the threat.
Hammock had a RBI single and Merchan added a two run double in the ninth.
The Sidewinders and Beavers play game two of their series on Wednesday night at PGE Park. Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit (2-3, 5.06) starts for Tucson against right-hander Josh Geer (5-6, 4.18) for Portland. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:55.
