Memphis Redbirds News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis beat Albuquerque twice Wednesday afternoon at AutoZone Park to sweep a doubleheader winning 3-1 in the first game and 5-4 in the second.
In the first game, the Redbirds used a strong outing from starting pitcher P.J. Walters. The right-hander allowed one run, unearned, on five hits with eight strikeouts to earn his team-best sixth win. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first Brian Barden led off with a double and came around to score on Colby Rasmus' single to center field. Nick Stavinoha put the âBirds on top in the third inning with his ninth home run of the year, a solo shot to left.
Albuquerque starter Chris Seddon took the loss for the Isotopes in a complete game effort. The lefty gave up three runs on seven hits over his six innings of work. Mark Worrell picked up his first save of the season for the Redbirds with a perfect final frame.
In the second game, the âBirds jumped to an early lead thanks to the long ball. Rico Washington crushed the first pitch he saw from Isotopes starter Chris Michalak for a grand slam to right field in the bottom of the first inning. The grand slam was the first of the season for Memphis. D'Angelo Jimenez went back-to-back with Washington hitting a solo homer to make it 5-1 Redbirds. Albuquerque climbed within a run in the sixth when former Redbird Tagg Bozied hit a solo home run to left. However, the Memphis bullpen responded to get the final five outs.
Clayton Mortensen notched his first Triple-A win with 5.1 innings on the bump. Mortensen gave up four runs on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Jason Motte picked up the save working a spotless inning of relief. Michalak was pegged with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits across 3.2 innings.
The Redbirds and Isotopes play tomorrow night with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. Mark Mulder is scheduled to make a rehab start for the âBirds with Albuquerque sending right-hander Dallas Trahern to the hill.
