'Topes fall to Iowa, 7-2
April 19, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
The Iowa Cubs (8-6) scored five times in the first two innings and never looked back, handing the Albuquerque Isotopes (6-8) their second straight loss, 7-2, on a sun-splashed Thursday afternoon at Principal Park. The set-back is the Isotopes' fifth defeat in their last six games on the current road trip.
Albuquerque jumped out first in the initial frame when Robert Andino led off the contest with a double, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Sorensen, and scored on a groundout off of the bat of John Gall to give the 'Topes a quick 1-0 lead. Andino's double was the lone extra base hit collected by an Isotopes hitter on a day in which Albuquerque was held to just four hits.
The I-Cubs answered right back in the bottom of the frame, however, when Micah Hoffpauir drilled a two-out double to left that plated Mike Fontenot to tie the score at 1-1. Koyie Hill then followed with a double of his own that scored Fontenot and then scampered home from second on a throwing error by Sorensen and fielding error by Chris Ashby, to give Iowa a 3-1 advantage after one.
Iowa added two more in the second when Buck Coats led off with a double and was immediately cashed in by a single from Carlos Rojas to extend the lead to 4-1 Cubs. After an Angel Pagan single moved Rojas to third, Albenis Machado drove him in with a sacrifice fly to put the I-Cubs up 5-1.
After weathering the initial storm, Albuquerque starter Ricardo Rodriguez settled in, retiring the next 12 Cubs he faced before he put two on in the bottom of the sixth on a hit-by-pitch and a single. Rodriguez (0-2), who suffered the loss, allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits through 5.2 innings while walking none and striking out two. I-Cubs starting pitcher Carlos Marmol (2-0) earned the win after holding the 'Topes to one run on three hits in seven innings of work, while Rocky Cherry (2) finished thing up to get the save.
The Isotopes would get a run back in the top of the eighth when John Baker scored Scott Seabol on a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2, but Iowa responded with two in the bottom of the frame to cap the scoring at 7-2.
The 'Topes will wrap up their first road trip of the season with one more game in Iowa Friday at 6:05 PM. Left-hander Chris George (1-0, 2.93) is on the hill for Albuquerque facing fellow lefty J.R. Mathes (1-1, 6.43 ERA). Fans can catch all the action on 610-AM The Sports Animal or streamed live on the internet at www.albuquerquebaseball.com.
