Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Tucson, AZ - Randy Johnson made his second consecutive start in a Sidewinders uniform as the Triple-A Champions topped the Salt Lake Bees by a final of 4-2. Johnson threw 95 pitches, 65 for strikes, in 6 innings of work. He struck out 7 batters and walked 1. He allowed 2 runs, both earned, on 6 hits. Offensively, 2B Danny Richar had a productive night for the Sidewinders, going 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI. 3B Brandon Wood notched three hits for the Bees in a losing effort.

The scoring started early when the second batter of the game, C Jeff Mathis, doubled to the wall and came around to score on a 3B Brandon Wood single to give Salt Lake the early 1-0 lead.

The Sidewinders struck back in the bottom half of the first frame when CF Jeff Salazar blasted his third homer of the year on the first pitch he saw. 1B Chris Carter followed up with a double to center and red-hot 3B Jamie D'Antona walked. SS Brian Barden then singled to shallow left, loading the bases. No more runners would come home, however, as DH Dee Brown was called out on an infield fly and RF Alex Romero grounded into a fielder's choice at short.

Salt Lake regained the lead in the top of the second on the strength of a DH Mike Eylward single followed by a double by 2B Adam Pavkovich. Eylward came home to score on a sac fly off the bat of CF Coby Smith, giving the Bees a 2-1 lead.

Johnson had eclipsed the 60 pitch barrio after battling the Bees in the bottom of the second but got out of the inning unscathed after winning an eleven pitch battle against LF Matt Brown by recording a two-out strikeout with runners on second and third.

The Sidewinders had runners on second and third with nobody out in the bottom of the third but were unable to score.

Johnson struck out the first two batters swinging in the top of the fourth before allowing a walk and getting the third out on a 6-3 groundball.

The Sidewinders took their first lead of the night in the bottom half of the fourth when Mark Johnson led the fifth off with a walk, followed by a nub single down the third-baseline by LF Donnie Sadler. A balk moved the runners to second and third with nobody out for 2B Danny Richar who doubled to left, bringing home both runners and giving Tucson a 3-2 lead.

With two out in the bottom of the seventh, Romero singled and M. Johnson doubled to bring in another run and extend Tucson's lead to 4-2.

Johnson left the game with the lead after six innings and thanks to the efforts of relievers LHP Bill Murphy and RHP Chad Harville, he went on to earn the win.

RHP Jason Bulger was tagged with the loss, allowing 2 runs, both earned, in one inning of work.

The series and homestand conclude tomorrow at TEP with a 6:30 start time.
