Saginaw Spirit News Release
Flint, MI - The Saginaw Spirit (13-17-1-0) return to action Friday evening, when they face the Flint Firebirds (18-13-0-2) for the 11th meeting of the regular season. The Firebirds can capture the Coors Light I-75 Divide Cup for the first time since the 2016-17 season with a victory of any kind.
Head-to-Head
The Spirit looked to return to their winning ways this evening and avoid their longest winless streak of the 2021-22 season. After winning the first three head-to-head matchups against Flint, the Spirit have dropped six of the last seven meetings with the Firebirds. The teams last clashed on Jan. 15, a 1-0 shutout for Flint goaltender Luke Cavallin at The Dow Event Center. Czech import Simon Slavicek scored his first OHL goal for the game-winner.
Last Time Out
Saginaw: The Spirit relinquished leads of 2-0 and 4-2 on the road in Erie Monday afternoon, before falling to the Otters by a 6-4 score. Overage forward Nick Wong scored two goals in the game for the Spirit, while Vancouver Canucks prospect Connor Lockhart scored twice for the Otters.
Flint: The Firebirds blew a four-goal lead on Tuesday night in Guelph, before Riley Piercey saved the effort with an overtime goal to win the game, 5-4. Goaltender Luke Cavallin made a season-high 44 saves in the victory. Riley Piercey, Tag Bertuzzi, and Ethan Keppen each recorded multi-point effort.
Players to Watch
Saginaw: Nick Wong
The overage forward is one of the Spirit's top performers over the last four games. Wong has four points (3G-1A) in his last four games. Wong recorded his first multi-goal game as a member of the Spirit Monday afternoon in Erie.
Flint: Riley Piercey
The 19-year-old undrafted forward in on fire of late, scoring in six of his last seven games (1G-8A-9PTS). Piercey scored the game-winning goal for the Firebirds Tuesday in an overtime win over Guelph. It was Piercey's first goal since Dec. 15 against Saginaw.
