Tommy Milone Cruises as "La Familia" Cages Cats for Copa

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (24-36) took down the Sacramento River Cats (24-37) at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday night, with a 3-1 victory in the series opener. With the win, Tacoma improved their record to 4-2 in series openers at home. Tuesday was the first "Copa de la Diversion" game at Cheney this season, featuring the La Familia de Tacoma uniform set (original 2022 debut on 5/28 vs. Las Vegas was rained out).

In the bottom of the first frame the Rainiers would tack on the first run of the ballgame. Forrest Wall started the inning with a lead off with a single and scored on an Erick Mejia RBI single with two out.

Tacoma would add to their lead in the bottom of the third. Justin Upton doubled down the left field line scoring Mason McCoy (BB), increasing the home lead to 2-0.

Rainiers starting pitcher Tommy Milone silenced the River Cat bats with a season-high six shutout innings. Milone totaled three strikeouts, scattered four hits and walked only two without allowing a River Cat to reach third base. Milone lowered his ERA to 1.13 over 32.0 IP, and the Rainiers are 5-2 when he pitches.

McCoy would tack on another run for Tacoma in the seventh inning with a solo homer to left field, his seventh on the year. His night would end with his sixth multi-run game of the season.

Sacramento got on the board in the eighth inning against Rainiers reliever Fernando Abad. A one out double from Arquimedes Gamboa led to a Heliot Ramos run-scoring single, the first and only tally of the night for the visitors.

Rainiers RHP Matt Brash finished the game with his first career Triple-A save. After allowing a leadoff single, Brash would retire the rest in order, with two strikeouts. He extended his scoreless streak to nine games (since May 25): 9.0 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 14 K. It was Brash's second career save; he recorded one with High-A Everett in 2021.

Tacoma will look for a third straight win tomorrow with a 6:05 p.m. PT first pitch at Cheney Stadium (3-1 homestand, so far). RHP Darren McCaughan will take the ball for Tacoma, facing 6'11" RHP Sean Hjelle of Sacramento.
