Toledo Mud Hens News Release

Toledo dropped the first of a two game series against the Columbus Clippers Friday night at Huntington Park by a score of 11-5 despite three-hit nights off the bats of the Hens' John Hicks and Dean Green.

Warwick Saupold had another strong outing, as he allowed only one run for a third consecutive start. Saupold went five innings allowing just four hits and one run while striking out seven and earning a no decision. Earning the win for the Clippers out of the bullpen was TJ House, his fifth of the 2016 season with Columbus.

Toledo jumped ahead early in Columbus, as JaCoby Jones ripped a one-out double to leftfield and came around to score on a Jeff McVaney RBI single to put the Hens up 1-0. The very next batter was Dean Green who cranked a two-RBI single to make it a 3-0 game in the first inning. Toledo added another run in the second inning when Steven Moya notched an RBI single to right field plating Argenis Diaz to make it 4-0.

Columbus cut it to a three run deficit in the fifth inning courtesy of a Michael Choice solo home run making it 4-1 Toledo, but Toledo answered with a solo blast of their own in the top of the sixth off the bat of Steven Moya to make it 5-1 Hens.

Toledo's Dustin Molleken relieved Saupold in the sixth inning and proceeded to allow three consecutive hits with the biggest being a three-run bomb over the left field fence off the bat of the Clippers' Jesus Aguilar to make it a 5-4 game. Logan Kensing was summoned to limit the harm, but Collin Cowgill and Erik Gonzalez RBI singles gave the Clippers the lead, 7-5. Angel Nesbitt came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning, but Columbus notched four more runs to go up 11-5.

Toledo plays the second and final game of a two game set in Columbus tomorrow night, as the first pitch is set for 7:15 PM. The Saturday night matchup will feature the Hens' RHP Myles Jaye (0-1, 4.41 ERA) against the Clippers' RHP Toru Marata (6-3, 4.15 ERA).

Toledo Tidbits:

September Call-Ups in Sight- Major and minor league rosters are allowed 25-man active rosters throughout the season, but once September 1st arrives, the roster is allowed to be expanded to 40. Currently there are several Mud Hens with an eye toward September, as they are on the 40-man roster including: Buck Farmer, Blaine Hardy, John Hicks, Dustin Molleken, Angel Nesbitt, Donn Roach, and Warwick Saupold. Due to injuries with the Tigers, Dixon Machado, Casey McGehee, Alex Presley, Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd, and Tyler Collins are currently on the big league 25-man roster

Hello to the New Hen- With all of the injuries in Detroit, the Mud Hens have been left shorthanded when it comes to position players. To bolster the roster, Detroit signed Pedro Ciriaco to a minor league contract. In 2016, the Dominican-born Ciriaco has played for Round Rock (AAA affiliate of Texas) and New Orleans (AAA affiliate of Miami). The veteran infielder is a career .268 MLB hitter with 5 home runs and 51 RBI, and last played 84 games for the Atlanta Braves in 2015. Another fun fact about the new Hen is that his younger brother, Audy, played for the Mud Hens within the Tigers' organization from 2009-2012. In two games, Pedro has yet to record a hit for the Hens hitting seventh and first in the lineup.

Looking Ahead- The Toledo Mud Hens' 2016 season is almost to the finish line, as only 17 games remain (six at Fifth Third Field). With the loss Friday night, the Mud Hens record falls to 58-69, and the Hens came into Friday's game 14 games out of first in the IL West. Toledo will return for four games beginning Thursday, August 25th. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
