Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) overcame an early three-run deficit to rally past the Pawtucket Red Sox 7-4 on Friday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders (79-48) lowered their magic number to nine thanks to the victory. The PawSox saw their record dip to 66-60.
Reliever Giovanny Gallegos (5-1) took home the win after dealing 2.1 scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out four, walked one and allowed a double to Brennan Boesch in the sixth. Jonathan Holder fired a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his fourth save. The loss went to William Cuevas (6-7), who allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits over three relief innings.
Luis Severino got the start for SWB and allowed four runs, three earned, on 10 hits across 5.2 innings. The right-hander whiffed 10 while walking only one.
The PawSox built a 3-0 lead on a Chris Young single in the third and misplay by the RailRiders' defense in the fourth. With bases loaded and one out, Jose Vinicio bounced into a potential double play at short, but the throw from second baseman Donovan Solano was offline to first. Two runs scored on the error.
Jake Cave got the RailRiders on the board with a single that plated Rob Refsnyder in the fourth. Clint Frazier mashed a two-run homer out to left-center in the fifth, tying the game 3-3. The shot was Frazier's second career Triple-A homer.
Pawtucket regained the advantage in the sixth when Dan Butler cracked a leadoff double to left and came across on a two-out single by Rusney Castillo.
It was a PawSox miscue that vaulted the RailRiders ahead for the first time in the seventh. Eddy Rodriguez reached on an infield single up the middle and raced to second on a throwing error by Vinicio. Mason Williams laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw from Cuevas sailed down the right field line. Rodriguez scored and Williams motored to third. A two-out double by Ben Gamel scored Williams for a 5-4 lead.
Williams ripped a two-run triple into right field in the eighth inning to polish the scoring.
The RailRiders aim for a second straight win against the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday, August 20. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery (2-1, 0.98) gets the start against southpaw Henry Owens (8-6, 3.70). The first 2500 fans receive a Mariano Rivera bobble arm, presented by Jack Williams Tire. Postgame fireworks follow the game. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. For tickets or more information, please call 570-969-BALL (2255) or visit swbrailriders.com.
