Toledo Falls in Extra Innings to Columbus
May 4, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
In the eleventh, Tyler Krieger started on second due to the International League extra inning rule. Oscar Mercado then walked before a Tim Federowicz double scored Krieger, giving Columbus a 6-5 lead. Toledo gave the intentional walk to Brandon Barnes to load the bases, setting up the double play. However, Ryan Flaherty walked to push in Mercado to make it 7-5 before Toledo made a pitching change.
To start the game, Nick Ramirez came out firing for the Hens, striking out the first two batters in the top of the first. The third out came via lineout to shortstop. Ramirez carried that momentum into the second inning, striking out the side for a total of five strikeouts through the first two innings.
Dustin Peterson put the Mud Hens on the board with a solo shot in the second inning over the left field wall. The home run came two games removed from his 5-for-5 night on Thursday.
In the top of the third, Columbus was able to tie up the game. Mercado led off the inning with an infield single and stole second. With one out, Barnes sent a shot over Cameron's head in center field for an RBI double to bring the score to 1-1.
Toledo gained back the lead in the bottom of fourth, stringing together hits and good fortune. Willi Castro was hit by a pitch and Mikie Mahtook walked before Josh Lester singled to load the bases. Victor Reyes tallied an RBI with a single up the middle followed by a Dawel Lugo sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Mud Hens a 3-1 lead.
The Mud Hens were able to add two more in the fifth. Chace Numata reached on a walk to begin the inning. Then, Daz Cameron was safe after Clippers' first basemen Bobby Bradley was pulled off the bag. Both would score on a Dustin Peterson single to center with the bases loaded to increase the Toledo lead to 5-1.
Toledo starter, Ramirez, was pulled after pitching five innings. Over those five, he gave up just one run on four hits while walking one, hitting another and striking out six.
Columbus inched back in the sixth inning. With reliever Caleb Thielbar on the mound, Flaherty doubled with a shot off the left field wall. With a runner on, Bradley knocked his fourth home run of the season to bring the score to 5-3 Toledo.
Thielbar pitched just one inning for Toledo, allowing two runs on four hits with one strikeout. Next out of the pen for the Hens was Nolan Blackwood.
To leadoff the seventh, Mercado reached first on a four pitch walk for Columbus and advanced to third on a hit and run single by Federowicz. With runners at the corners, Barnes grounded into a double play, but it was enough for Mercado to score, making it 5-4 Mud Hens.
At the start of the bottom of the seventh, Columbus made a pitching change. Brooks Pounders came in for starter Shao-Ching Chiang. Chiang pitched six innings for the Clippers, striking out five, but giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks.
In the eighth after a Trayce Thompson single, Blackwood got Bradley to strikeout and Chace Numata threw out Thompson trying to steal. After that, Blackwood was replaced by Jose Cisnero. Blackwood went 1.2 innings, giving up three hits and one walk with one scoring. He also struckout one batter.
In the top of the ninth, Greg Allen doubled to left to start the inning for Columbus followed by a Mercado single to give the Clippers runners at the corners with no outs and down one. Mercado then stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Next up, Federowicz walked to load the bases. A Barnes groundball would score Allen, but the Hens would get the first out of the inning at second with a fielder's choice. Cisnero was able to strike out Flaherty and Thompson to escape the inning with the score just tied at five.
Cisnero's final line would be over 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one walk with two runs scoring.
For Columbus the reliever, Pounders, struckout five of the six batters he faced with the other one popping up to first base, but made a change in the bottom of the ninth, calling on Josh Smith.
In extra innings, the Hens brought in the right-handed Zac Houston to pitch. Houston struckout the first two batters in the inning with the third lining out to left field with Mahtook making a sliding catch to end the inning and bring Toledo to the plate. In the Hens half, Toledo loaded the bases, but were unable to capitalize, sending the game to the eleventh inning.
After Columbus scored two to start the eleventh, the Hens called on Sandy Baez. Houston pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one hit and walking three, allowing five runs, four earned.
With Baez on the mound, Thompson doubled down the third baseline to score three runners, increasing the Columbus lead to 10-5.
