Wilson Tobs News Release
KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (July 13, 2011) - The Wilson Tobs (4-7, 19-20) snapped a three-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 5-3 win over the Outer Banks Daredevils (5-7, 16-22) at the First Flight Baseball Complex. The win gives the Tobs a 5-4 edge in the season-series with their Coastal Plain League North Division rival.
Wilson took the lead in the top of the third facing a 2-0 deficit. Shortstop Angelo LaBruna, 2B Keith Morrisroe, 3B Zac Mitchell, and catcher Brian Holberton all hit consecutive singles, which led to three runs crossing the plate and the Tobs securing a 3-2 advantage.
The Daredevils took the initial lead thanks to DH Alex Aurrichio, who has been on a tear against the Tobs of late. Aurichio tripled to the gap in left-center field with one out in the second to drive in two and put the Outer Banks ahead 2-0. For Aurichio, it was his second triple against the Tobs in as many games.
Wilson upped its lead to 4-2 in the fourth when they loaded the bases with two outs on a single and a couple of walks. Designated hitter Garrett Davis scored from third when a wild pitch from Outer Banks starter Matt Pierpont got past his catcher Michael Thomas and rolled to the fence behind home plate. Pierpont (1-2) got tagged with the loss as he allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits. Pierpont also walked three and struck out four.
The Daredevils cut the Tobs lead to one in the bottom of the fifth. With runners on the corners and one out RF Donnie Corsner hit a deep fly ball to center field that Tobs CF Ryan Mathews couldn't come up with, resulting in an RBI single for Corsner.
Wilson got the run back though in their half of the sixth when Morrisroe delivered a run-scoring single to right with runners at first and second and two outs. Earlier in the game Morrisroe extended his current season-long on base streak to 21 games.
Gil Walker (4-0) got the start and win for Wilson and went six complete innings giving up three runs (two earned) on 11 hits and two walks while striking out one. After LHP Jon Levin pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth, RHP Tony Wieber entered in the ninth to record his sixth save of the season.
The Tobs will return home tomorrow night as they take on the Petersburg Generals at 7:05pm. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Clay Murphy (1-1), making his sixth start of the summer. Thursdays are "Thirsty Thursdays" at Fleming Stadium, with 16 ounce domestic drafts available in the beer garden for just $1.50, and fountain drinks available for $1.25. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
