Five HiToms named CPL All-Stars

THOMASVILLE, N.C. - The Coastal Plain League announced both All-Star teams on Tuesday and five HiToms were selected to participate in the All-Star game on Monday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville.

Two Tommies were chosen for the National team which will be led by Dirk Kinney from Edenton with Jeff Steele serving as an assistant. The first player chosen with right handed pitcher JJ Jankowski.

Jankowski leads the team with 1.84 ERA and has posted a 2-1 record on the hill while also leading the Coastal Plain League with 57 strikeouts, eight more than the next closest pitcher. This will be the second consecutive trip to the All-Star game for the Catawba righty.

Joining Jankowski on the National team will be HiToms infielder Stephen Carmon. Starting all 39 games for the Tommies this summer, Carmon has shown his durability providing speed and the tendency to reach base whenever needed. The junior from USC-Aiken leads the team with a .286 batting average has also collected 19 RBI and is 7-11 in stolen bases.

Fayetteville's Darrell Darrell Handelsman will lead the American squad which will feature three HiToms. Patrick Koontz who began the summer as a conditional player received his full-time contract on June 20 and has made the most of his time. Koontz is currently second on the team with a .284 batting average and has driven in 15 runs. The UNC-Asheville junior has also been steady at the dish having twice this season reached hitting streaks for five or more games.

HiToms closer Travis Tingle will join Koontz on the American squad for Monday's All-Star game. The Louisville junior has racked up eight saves for the Tommies this season which ranks him third among CPL closers. Tingle has also finished 18 games which leads the league.

Outfielder Jacob Rogers will be the final piece of the HiToms All-Star puzzle, out of Mount Olive, Rogers, has put on a clinic for the Tommies with his five home runs and 23 RBI both, lead the team.

The junior has also shown some defensive versatility playing mostly right field but has started six games at the hot corner.

The 2011 All-Star festivities will begin on Sunday night in Fayetteville with the Fan Fest which includes the Home Run Derby. The playing of the 13th annual All-Star Game will take place on Monday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05.

The HiToms are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
