HiToms drop heartbreaker to Mustangs
July 13, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
High Point-Thomasville HiToms News Release
THOMASVILLE, N.C. - Martinsville scored two runs in the top of the ninth against the HiToms to tie the score at four before Justin Sizemore homered to right in the top of the 11th to win the game for the Mustangs 5-4 on Wednesday night at Finch Field.
Martinsville (5-5) took the lead for good with one man out in the 11th when Sizemore blasted the Austin Moyer (L, 2-5) pitch over the wall in right field for a 5-4 lead they didn't give up. The home run would be the only hit Moyer would allow in his two innings of work.
In the bottom of the inning, Jonathan Van Eaton (W, 1-1) struck out the side to give the Mustangs the victory.
The HiToms (8-4) led by a pair of runs entering the top of the ninth inning with their closer, Travis Tingle, on the mound. With one out, Derek Hopkins doubled and Eli Hynes followed with a single to put runners at the corners. After a failed pickoff by Tingle, Hopkins scored and pinch runner, Ford Wilson later scored the tying run on a wild pitch as Tingle blew his second save of the season.
Overshawdowed by the late inning heroics, was Alex Williams who blasted a pair of solo home runs for the HiToms and Conner Scarborough who worked eight strong innings allowing just two runs while issuing only one free pass and fanning six, the HiToms righty did not factor in the decision.
The Tommies are back in action tomorrow night at 7:30 when they travel to Sims Legion Park to battle the Gastonia Grizzlies. The HiToms return to Finch Field on Friday night at 7:00 when they once again battle Gastonia.
Following the game on Friday, fans are encouraged to stick around and enjoy a movie on the big screen at Finch Field.
