Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - Esterlin Paulino pitched 6.2 innings, allowing only three runs and the Steamer offense scored twice late against the Copperhead bullpen to win their sixth in a row and improve to 11-1 in the second half.
In the bottom of the second with two outs Nathan Burns reached on an error after his groundball went right under the glove of Asheboro first baseman Mike McCarthy. Vinnie Mejia took advantage and drove a pitch from Asheboro starting pitcher Cordell Greene into the left center field gap for an RBI double to get Edenton on the board 1-0.
An inning later Asheboro was bitten by the error bug again. Bo Bigham reached on an infield single, his first hit as an Edenton Steamer. Brett Christopher singled him to third and on the throw from centerfielder Carvell Copeland, Bigham was awarded home plate because the throw went out of play. The error made it 2-0 Steamers.
Joey Wendle and Zach Stewart traded doubles off of Greene to plate another Edenton run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 3-0 Steamers.
Paulino cruised through six innings of work. He allowed one hit, he walked a batter and hit a batter, while giving up no runs to the Copperheads.
In the top of the seventh Asheboro finally got to Paulino. Jacob Wilson hit a lead-off double and then Mike McCarthy hit a homer-run that snuck over the right field wall to make the score 3-2 Steamers. John Fidanza followed up the two-run homer with a solo home-run to tie the game at 3-3. Three batters and two hits later Paulino was lifted for David Teasly, who retired the only batter he faced on two pitches to earn the win.
Edenton re-claimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh off Christian McDonald, who was on in relief of Greene. Wendle was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a Zach Stewart single. On the play Copeland, the Asheboro centerfielder, mis-played the ball and it rolled all the way to wall for the third error charged to the Copperheads.
In the bottom of the eighth Edenton added an insurance run. With two outs Bigham doubled and came home on Brett Christopher's RBI single to make it 5-3 Steamers.
Ethan Cole came out of the Edenton bullpen and pitched a one, two, three ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season.
Paulino pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits. He walked one and struck out none; he earned a no decision for his work. Teasley earned his first win relief for retiring one batter to end the bottom of the seventh; he improved to 1-0 on the season.
