Wilson Tobs News Release
EDENTON, N.C. (June 15, 2011) - Two nights after collecting a season-high 16 hits, the Wilson Tobs (5-9) were limited to just one hit (a season-low) by the Edenton Steamers (9-4) on Wednesday night in a 2-0 loss at Historic Hicks Field.
In total three pitchers combined to shutout the Tobs for the third time this year. Earning the win was Steamers starter LHP Esterlin Paulino (2-1), who threw seven scoreless innings of one hit ball. He was replaced in the eighth by RHP Jordan Glover, who retired the Tobs in order in the inning. In the ninth LHP Dustin Quattrocchi gave up a walk to the leadoff batter, but then got pinch hitter Jeff Kremer to ground into a 4-3 double play. Quattrocchi struck out the final batter of the game to earn his first save of the season.
The Steamers put their first run on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Third baseman Mitch Wells led off with a single, and he advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After 1B Adam Giacalone struck out swinging for the second out of the inning, catcher Kevin Whitehead drove Wells home with a double to the wall in right, putting Edenton ahead 1-0.
The Steamers added another in the home half of the seventh. After CF Brett Christopher doubled to left-centerfield to lead off the inning, RF Brian Blasik walked. Two batters later 2B Joe Wendle was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with just one out. RHP Tony Wieber came on in relief at that point for the Tobs, and he struck out the first batter he faced for the second out of the inning. However, Wieber lost control of his next hitter and gave up a bases loaded walk, which allowed Christopher to score from third to put Edenton up 2-0.
RHP Chase Bebout (0-2) got the start and earned the hard-luck loss for Wilson. He pitched six plus innings, allowing both Edenton runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking three.
The Tobs return home to Wilson tomorrow night (Thirsty Thursday) to take on the Peninsula Pilots for the third time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Fleming. On the hill for Wilson will be LHP Brice Rivenbark (1-1), making his third start of the season. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
