Forest City Owls News Release

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. - The Forest City Owls kicked off a three-game road trip on the right foot, defeating the Outer Banks Daredevils, 4-2, at First Flight Baseball Complex on Wednesday night. The Owls improve to 9-6, while the Daredevils drop to 6-8.

The Owls trotted Seth Cutler-Voltz onto the mound for his third start of the season. He entered the game with a league-best 0.00 ERA. The Virginia Commonwealth right-hander threw six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits, striking out two batters and walking one. Cutler-Voltz walked away with his team-leading third win of the season.

Outer Banks' Zach Smith also started his third game of the season. Smith tossed five innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits, striking out one batter and walking none. Smith was saddled with the loss.

Forest City wasted no time putting a run on the board. CF Buddy Sosnoskie led off the proceedings with a triple to center field. Sosnoskie scored on DH Konstantine Diamaduros' groundout to second. The Owls owned a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Owls struck again in the second inning. With two outs and runners on the corners, Sosnoskie torpedoed a single into center field, bringing LF Cameron Conner home. Forest City found itself ahead 2-0 after two innings.

Owls RF Axel Johnson led off the third inning with a triple down the right field line. A couple of at-bats later, SS Reed Harper looped a single into shallow right field, plating Johnson and boosting Forest City's lead to 3-0.

Outer Banks scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With runners on second and third and one out, 2B Tyler Sciacca rolled a grounder to the right side. Owls 2B Jake Watson couldn't handle the grounder, allowing Chad Carman to score. On the next at-bat, SS Mike Levine laid down a bunt down the first-base line. Forest City 1B Eric Fisher fielded the roller but was unable to step on first base in time. Levine legged out an infield single and DH Alex Aurrichio crossed the plate to cut Forest City's lead to 3-2. Aurrichio's run snapped Cutler-Voltz's streak of 17 innings without allowing an earned run.

The Owls answered in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Watson lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center field, allowing Johnson to score. Forest City went ahead 4-2 after five frames.

After Cutler-Voltz exited at the top of the seventh inning, the relief combination of N.C. State newcomers D.J. Thomas and Danny Healey did not allow a run nor a hit in their two innings of work. Closer Adam Izokovic was impressive once again, shutting the door on the Daredevils and racking up his fifth save of the season.

Sosnoskie continued his hot hitting for Forest City, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Johnson and Harper each recorded two hits. Johnson scored two runs and Harper drove in a run. Carman was the only Daredevil hitter to register multiple hits. Sciacca and Levine each drove in a run.

The Owls continue their epic road trip tomorrow night at Edenton, when they will take on the North Division-leading Steamers. First pitch from Historic Hicks Field is set for 7:00 PM.
