Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - He came in leading the league in on base percentage, so it was only fitting that the offensive catalyst in the Fayetteville SwampDogs 4-3 win over the Columbia Blowfish on Wednesday night was leadoff hitter Nick Crucet.
The SwampDogs leftfielder singled in his first three at-bats, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI, walk, and two stolen bases to help Fayetteville (9-5) capture both ends of the home-and-home midweek series with Columbia (4-11).
The win makes two in a row for the 'Dogs, who now head to Florence to face a RedWolves team that beat them twice last weekend. Coupled with Morehead City's 2-0 loss to Wilmington, the SwampDogs are now a game and half up on the Marlins and two ahead of the idle RedWolves. Columbia now sits at 4-11.
Billy Urban delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning for the SwampDogs, and later came around to score on Crucet's third single. It's only the second time all season that the SwampDogs never trailed in the game - both against Columbia. Eric Grabe's third inning sacrifice fly accounted for the other SwampDogs run.
Brewer Carter (1-1) pitched five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to earn the victory. Once again, the bullpen delivered zeroes following Carter's exit, as Mike Anarumo and Mike Hebert combined for three scoreless innings and Cody Davis once again pitched a perfect ninth, earning his fourth save.
John Long (1-1) took the loss for Columbia, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings. Blowfish slugger Zack Smith, who came in batting .441 and had hit a homerun in each of the previous two games between these two teams, was held hitless by the quartet of SwampDogs pitchers.
After their trip to Florence, the SwampDogs return home on Friday and play host to the Wilmington Sharks on NASCAR Night driven by Black's Tire a& Auto Service. Gates will open early at 5:30 p.m. for the annual Fayettevile Fire Department charity softball game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
