Edenton Steamers News Release
HAMPTON, VA - The second place Steamers jumped out in front of the first place Pilots early and often, tagging Pilot's starter Phil McCarthy for seven earned runs in four innings. Righty Jordan Egan picked up his first win of the year with 2.2 innings of shut-out relief and Edenton secured the 9-5 victory in Peninsula.
After Peninsula took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Steamer right-handed starter Adam Giacalone with an RBI fielder's choice by Tristan Moore, it was all Edenton.
In the top of the second with two outs catcher Nick Gaeta was hit by a pitch. Austen Colt doubled and the newest Steamer, Brett Christopher out of University of Pacific in California, brought them both home with a single to give Edenton the 2-1 lead.
The Clams followed up the two run second with a three run third after back-to-back singles by Ryan Brenner and Zach Stewart set the table for Vinnie Mejia. Mejia doubled home both runners and the score was 4-1 Steamers. Two batters later Gaeta singled home Mejia and the scoreboard read 5-1 in favor of the visiting team.
Zach Stewart connected on his second home run of the year in the top of the fourth against Pilots starter McCarthy; a two run shot and 7-1 was the Steamers lead.
Peninsula rallied in the home half of the fourth hanging a four spot on the board. Giacalone did not survive the bottom of the fourth after allowing a double to Chas Crane, an RBI triple to Jake Cave, an RBI groundout to Ryan Huck and finally an RBI single to Jimmy Rider that cut the lead to 7-4 Steamers. On Rider's RBI single a throwing error charged to right fielder Brian Blasik allowed the fourth and final run of the inning to score for the Pilots and 7-5 was the score.
Edenton tacked on a run in the top of the eighth on a Tim Saunders RBI single and another run in the top of the ninth on an RBI infield single by Ryan Brenner; who also swiped three bags in the win.
The Steamer bullpen did not allow a run over the final 5.1 innings as Jordan Egan pitched 2.2 scoreless frames, followed by Quintavious Drains throwing a scoreless inning. Dustin Quattrocchi retired the only batter he faced and Ethan Cole faced five in the ninth. Overall the Steamers bullpen stranded eight Pilot runners in the final 5.1 innings.
With the victory Edenton climbs back into first place in the Northern division based on their .667 winning percentage to Peninsula's .643. Edenton welcomes in the Tobs tonight to Historic Hicks Field.
