Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. (June 9, 2011) - The Wilson Tobs (1-8) dropped their seventh straight game Thursday night, 4-3 to the Petersburg Generals (2-6) at Fleming Stadium in front of 1,168 in attendance on the second Thirsty Thursday of the Season.
The Generals collected all their runs in the top of the fourth on a grand slam homerun off the bat of CF Tyler McCarthy. McCarthy had come in to the game with just two hits on the season, and he finished the night 2-4 with four RBI. It was the first grand slam hit off the Tobs this season, and the seventh homerun hit against Wilson pitching.
Giving up the grand slam for the Tobs was RHP Nick Blount (0-2), who took the loss despite lasting eight innings and allowing just those four runs on six hits. Blount also walked two and struck out five. RHP Tony Wieber came on to pitch a scoreless ninth for the Tobs.
Wilson took the initial lead in the ball game on an RBI double by SS Angelo LaBruna to go up 1-0 in the second. One inning later, 2B Alex Jones scored on a throwing error by Generals 3B Jorge Saez, making it 2-0 Petersburg.
After the grand slam by McCarthy in the fourth, the Tobs countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. LaBruna led off with his second double of the night, and after a hit batsmen and a single pushed him to third, he scored on a double-play groundout off the bat of Jones to bring Wilson within one.
A combination of three Petersburg pitchers held the Tobs scoreless the rest of the night. Because Generals starter LHP Brian Derner only pitched four innings, RHP Tommy Isaacs (1-1) was credited with the win. He went 2 1/3 innings in relief and surrendered no runs on two hits and one walk. Isaacs also struck out three Tobs.
The Tobs will try to break their losing streak when they head on the road tomorrow to take on the Peninsula Pilots for the first time this season. First pitch is at 7:05 pm in Hampton, VA. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Clay Murphy (0-0), making his second start of the season. The next Tobs home game will be Saturday, June 11 at 7:05pm against the Pilots as well.
