Wilmington Sharks News Release

Five first inning runs gave the Wilmington Sharks a lead that would never be in doubt as they grabbed an easy, 8-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes of the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League in an exhibition contest Thursday night.

Lead aside, the Sharks provided more than enough run support for starter Chris Knauff, who tossed 6-1/3 innings of five hit, five strikeout baseball.

Daniel Aldrich and Aaron Preston each finished with two hits on the night, as four other Sharks contributed a hit apiece.

Casey Allision led the team with two RBIs, while Aldrich, Preston, Scott Coleman and Jake Mayers all tallied an RBI in the game as well.

Back-to-back walks in the bottom of the first inning gave the Sharks two base runners before Aldrich connected on an RBI single to open the scoring. A Hurricane error plated another run before Preston delivered his RBI double and scored on Allison's two-run single to cap the first inning scoring.

Another pair of walks came around to score on another Hurricane error in the third to increase the Wilmington margin to seven runs.

The Hurricanes plated their only run in the seventh after Johann Knee led off the inning with a single before coming around to score later in the inning.

Wilmington added a final run in the bottom of the eighth when Tommy Houmard picked up a pinch-hit single before coming around to on an RBI pinch-hit single by Ricardo Lizcano.

Carolina starter Timothy Silsby was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs and only recording one out in the first inning before being pulled.

The Wilmington Sharks are back in action Friday night as they jump back into Coastal Plain League action when they host the Columbia Blowfish on Time Warner Cable seat cushion giveaway night. Gates open at 6 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
