Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins narrowly defeated the Fayetteville SwampDogs at Big Rock Stadium on Thursday evening by the score of 5-4. The Marlins issued Fayetteville its second loss of the season, moving to a record of 5-6 in their third consecutive victory.

Left-handed pitcher Caleb Smith made his second start of the season after dominating the Wilson Tobs in his first outing. Smith was not quite as invincible this time around, but he pitched well enough to record another win, tossing seven innings and giving up four runs on three hits. He also struck out eight in the effort.

Marlins first baseman Zach Stephens stroked a two-run homer to the opposite field in the fifth, pushing Morehead City to a 4-2 lead, and a sacrifice fly from Sam Kimmel two innings later put a fifth run across for the Marlins. Despite a two-run eighth inning, Chase Wellbrock and the Marlins defense held on for the save and the 5-4 win.

The Marlins do not play on Friday (their first off-day since the season began on May 31) and will host a weekend series at Big Rock Stadium against the Wilmington Sharks on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be "NationwideOn Your Side" Night at the ballpark, and Consumer Concepts will sponsor Marlins Koozie Night on the season's second Time Warner Cable Super Duper Sunday. Both games are set to start at 7:05 p.m., with gates opening at 6 o'clock.

Plenty of offensive firepower helped the Marlins earn the much needed win. First baseman Zach Stephens went 3-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, two runs batted in, and three runs scored. He now leads the team in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.333), RBIs (9), runs scored (5), and slugging percentage (.593). Michael Garcia, Adam Norton, and Ethan Santora rounded up two hits apiece, as well, each given four at-bats.
