HiToms Make a Splash in MLB Draft

HIGH POINT/THOMASVILLE, N.C. - Both current and former HiToms made an impact in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft which concluded on Tuesday afternoon in New York City as one current and two former HiToms were selected by big league clubs.

Mark Threkeld out of Louisiana Tech played his final games for the Tommies on Tuesday night as he was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 25th round of the draft. While in a Thomasville uniform, Threkeld was hitting .231 with a home run and a RBI. While at Tech is spring, the third basemen hit .309 with 19 doubles, nine home runs and drove in 45 runs.

Two former HiToms both off the 2009 squad also heard their named called on the final day of the draft. Charley Thurber who hit .235 for the Tommies with 21 RBI, 22 runs scored and banged home 10 doubles was selected by the New York Mets with their 39th selection.

Thurber hit .230 this past season at the University of Tennessee collecting two homers and driving in 12 for the Vols.

Chris Epps is the final former HiTom to be selected in the draft as the Houston Astros scooped up the Clemson senior in the 45th round. Epps hit .292 for the Tigers in 2011 with 10 home runs and 42 RBI.

During the 2009 season when Epps sported a Thomasville uniform, he led the team with a .344 average socking 10 doubles with six home runs and 22 RBI.
