MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Caleb Smith allowed just three hits in seven innings, and the Morehead City Marlins defeated the Fayetteville SwampDogs, 5-4, at Puck O'Neal Field in Morehead City on Thursday night.

The SwampDogs scored the first two runs of the game, the second coming on a leadoff homerun from Joe Vaskas in the top of the fourth inning. But that was the final hit Smith (2-0) would allow in his outing, finishing with three runs on three hits and eight strikeouts.

Brewer Carter (0-1) made his second start of the year and took the loss for the SwampDogs. He allowed just three hits, but walked four and allowed four runs. He allowed a two-run homerun to Zach Stephens - the second homerun Stephens has hit against the SwampDogs this season - that tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

After the Marlins (5-6) scored three more runs, it looked as if the SwampDogs would once again stage a late-inning comeback. Trailing 5-2 in the eighth, they plated two runs behind a wild pitch an RBI double from Vaskas. But Marlins reliever Chase Wellbrock struck out Shawn Pleffner with Vaskas at second and two outs to end the threat.

Wellbrock pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the year. The Marlins have now won three straight.

Cody Hudson, a sophomore from Austin Peay, delivered an RBI single in his first game as SwampDog. His college teammate, Alex Belew, also made his first appearance on the mound for Fayetteville (7-2), allowing one run and striking out two in two innings of work.

The four total hits are the lowest output for the SwampDogs offense this season.

The SwampDogs wrap up their four-game road swing Friday night with their first meeting of the season against the Florence Redwolves. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. The SwampDogs return home to J.P. Riddle Stadium on Saturday night against Florence, and the first 500 fans 21 and up will receive a free pint glass courtesy of R.A. Jeffreys Distributing and Budweiser. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
