Lexington County Blowfish News Release

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Ross Gerdeman has been selected in the 35th round of the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 1054th pick. He is the only current Blowfish player, along with four former Blowfish selected this year. Gerdeman has already left Columbia to negotiate his professional contract.

"It's great for the kid. It's what everybody dreams of, playing professional baseball," Blowfish manager Lee Gronkiewicz says, "We hope that every single kid we bring in here has a chance to compete at that level and it was a great honor to coach him for a couple games."

Former Blowfish Scott Wingo, Matt Williams, Matt Leeds and Tyler Webb were also drafted this week. Wingo was taken earliest of the group; in the eleventh round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tyler Webb was picked up by Cincinnati and could be a part of the great NL Central rivalry with Matt Williams, who was taken 470th overall by St. Louis.

Leeds, a two-time All-Southern Conference First Team selection, was chosen by the Texas Rangers in the 31st round with the 954th overall pick.

Gronkiewicz says he will keep an eye on Gerdeman throughout his career.

"We're excited to watch his status all season long," he says.

Gerdeman made three appearances for the Blowfish this season, throwing 3.1 innings garnering a 5.40 ERA, allowing six hits while striking out one.
