Bats Stay Hot as Marlins Down Tobs
June 9, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins scored seven runs for the second evening in a row to earn consecutive victories for the first time this season, defeating the Wilson Tobs at Fleming Stadium 7-4 on Wednesday.
A key component in the Marlins recent offensive production has been Coach Jay Bergman's adjustments of the lineup. Austin Wulf, who moved to the leadoff spot in the Marlins order, finished Wednesday's game 1-for-2 with three runs, walking and crossing the plate in each of his first three at-bats.
However, some of the Marlins best bats are manufacturing offense from the places they've been all along. Jake Gronsky, second baseman out of Monmouth University, is a perfect example of such. Gronsky went 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs batted in against the Tobshitting ninth, whereas he's been toward the bottom of the lineup all season.
Perhaps the biggest difference maker for the Marlins against the Tobs, though, was a batter who has not been in the lineup all year until Wednesday night. Chase McDonald, a freshman first baseman from East Carolina, suited up in black and blue for his Coastal Plain League debut and was certainly impressive. McDonald was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in on the evening, making an immediate impact in the three-hole for Morehead City.
Marlins starting pitcher Alex Facundus plunked three Tob hitters, unleashed a wild pitch and a couple of passed balls, and walked three. Despite the wild night, the righty only surrendered two earned runs in his 4.2 innings of work, though his performance did not merit a decision.
Appalachian State duo Ryan Frankoff and Tyler Moore finished the game yet again for the Fish. Frankoff tossed for 1.2 innings, starting with one down in the seventh, allowing one hit and striking out two. Then Moore picked up the save in the final frame, permitting one base hit and fanning one.
The Marlins return home to Puck O'Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium to again face their South division adversaries, the Fayetteville SwampDogs. Set to start at 7:05 p.m., the game will be the first Thirsty Thursday of the season at "The Rock," presented by Pepsi. The gates open at 6 o'clock, as Time Warner Cable will sponsor a Marlins seat cushion giveaway.
