Titans fall out of first place

December 12, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release

TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Titans could only manage one win in their three-game, three-day weekend, a 6-3 victory over the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday, and fell out of first place for the first time in two weeks. The Condors sent the Titans away with a 4-2 defeat on Friday, while Trenton was downed by Reading, 7-4 on Sunday. Though Mike Pandolfo extended his point-scoring streak to thirteen games with a three-goal, six-assist weekend, the Titans are now 11-7-1 on the season and sit in third place in North Division.

CONDORS SWOOP IN FOR WIN: Sean Venedam's two goals helped the Condors pull out a 4-2 victory over the Titans in the teams' first meeting since 2004-05. After Mike Pandolfo tied the score 1-1 with a power play goal in the second period, Venedam put his team up for good with markers at 17:24 of the second and 1:18 of the third. Goalie Jamie Hodson foiled the Titan early scoring attempts, going 13-for-13 in the first period and 38-for-40 overall.

TITANS SHOOT DOWN CONDORS: As they have done all season after a loss, the Titans responded and then some. Mike Pandolfo's four-points (2g, 2a) led the way for a 6-3 Titans' win in the rematch against the Condors on Saturday. This one was in hand in the second period as the top line of Pandolfo, Scott Bertoli and Les Haggett each scored to build a 4-0 Trenton lead. Gregg Naumenko kept Bakersfield out of the net in the first period making 21 saves, while stopping 48 for the game.

ZAPPALA/ROYALS CROWN TITANS: Joe Zappala picked up the hat trick against his former team to help the Royals to a 7-4 triumph over the Titans. Twice Trenton was able to fight back from one-goal deficits before Zappala put the game out of reach with goals in the second and third periods. Doug Christiansen contributed to the cause with two goals, while Greg Hogeboom added four assists. Mike Pandolfo picked up helpers on three of the Titans' four goals to extend his scoring streak to thirteen games (12g, 12a).

PANDOLFO PILES ON THE POINTS: Mike Pandolfo gathered three goals and six assists in three games this weekend to continue his hot streak and climb higher among the ECHL scoring leaders. The fifth-year pro picked up a power play goal and an assist on Friday night, before tying a team season-high with four points (2g, 2a) on Saturday. Pandolfo saw his six-game goal scoring streak (10g) come to an end on Sunday, but his three assists ensured his point-scoring streak (12g, 12a) would go to thirteen games. With the help of the highest active point streak in the league, he now ranks fifth in the ECHL with 32 points (16g, 16a) and is tied for the lead with 16 goals scored this season.

PP PUTS EM UP: The Titans scored two power play goals in each of their three games this weekend going 25.0% (6-for-24) during the week of play. The big weekend on the man-advantage gave Trenton the fifth best power play in the ECHL (18.8%). They have scored on the power play in 13 of their 19 games this season.

TOPSY-TURVY NORTH: In what has been a tightly-packed start out of the gate for teams in the North, just six points sit between the first place Toledo Storm and the Cincinnati Cyclones, Dayton Bombers and Wheeling Nailers, who are tied for fifth. No two teams in the division are separated by more than two points with the third place Titans a point behind the Reading Royals and a point ahead of the Johnstown Chiefs.

QUICK HITS: The Titans are now 6-0-0 after losses in regulation. ...Trenton is 11-2-1 when scoring three or more goals. ...Gregg Naumenko set a team season-high with 21 saves in the first period against the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday. ...Gregg Johnson has notched six points (3g, 3a) in his last three games.
