Titans Fall in Shootout to Elmira, 5-4

Trenton, NJ -- The Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell to the Elmira Jackals in a shootout, 5-4, Friday night at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton.

Elmira (29-20-2-2, 62 pts) opened the scoring 9:00 into the contest when Jordon Southorn beat Scott Wedgewood (15-19-3-2, 22 saves). The power play marker was the only goal in the first period.

The Titans (20-26-4-4, 48 pts) evened things up early in the second when J.S. Berube put a rebound past Maxime Clermont (14-10-2-1, 34 saves) from his stomach. Kory Nagy and Brian Haczyk earned assists on Berube's fourth goal of the season in his first game back with the team after reassignment from AHL Albany. Connor Goggin then gave the home team the lead minutes later with his sixth of the season. The defenseman took a feed from Jacob Cepis in the high slot and ripped a laser into the top left corner of Clermont's net. Berube was credited with the secondary assist on the play.

The onslaught continued when Kelly Zajac, also in his first game back with the club, jabbed home the rebound of a blast from Stephen Schultz to give the Titans their third goal in a span of 6:25. Cepis earned his second helper of the night on Zajac's fifth goal in a Titans uniform. The Jackals quickly stopped the bleeding with a goal from Matt Carter at 16:04 of the second, and Kyle Bushee knotted things at three with a power play marker just 1:20 later to round out the scoring in the second.

Elmira regained the lead in the third when Jordan Pietrus buried a short-handed bid at 12:40. The Titans refused to go down easy, and Kelly Zajac gave the Titans new life with under five minutes to play when he intercepted Southorn's pass between the faceoff circles, walked in alone on Clermont and snapped a low shot past the Elmira keeper on the blocker side. Zajac's second of the night was enough to send the division rivals to overtime for the third time this season.

After five scoreless minutes the teams headed to a shootout for the second time this season. The Titans won the first shootout, a wild 7-6 contest on December 1 st, but The Jackals got the upper hand this time. Carter and Pietrus beat Wedgewood, and Clermont stopped four Trenton attempts to earn the win for Elmira. The Titans are now 4-5-1-1 this season against the Jackals. The two will meet five more times this season, with the next meeting Thursday March 7th back in Trenton.

The Titans have a quick turnaround, as they get ready to host arch-rival Reading tomorrow night at 7:05 before heading to Reading to complete the home-and-home with the Royals.
