Elmira Jackals News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Elmira Jackals earned their third win in a row over the Trenton Titans by virtue of a 5-4 shootout win at the Sun National Bank Center on Friday night. Elmira improved its record to 29-20-4 with the win.
The Jackals used superior special teams play in the first period to claim a 1-0 lead and hold that advantage through the first 20 minutes. After killing off the first penalty of the evening, the Jackals used their power play to gain the early advantage. Working a 4-on-3 power play, Jordon Southorn took a pass from Andrew Rowe in the high slot and whipped a wrister past Trenton goalie Scott Wedgewood. Elmira's defense was stout in support of Maxime Clermont in the first as it allowed just eight shots on goal. Clermont swatted away each one and Elmira's lead held to the start of the second.
The home team came back with a vengeance in the second, though, and with a quick burst of offense took a two goal lead. J.S. Berube started the barrage when he dove for a rebound in front of Clermont and swatted it home for his fourth goal just past seven minutes into the period. Connor Goggin followed at 11:47 to give the Titans their first lead and then it was doubled by Kelley Zajac at 13:27. Like they have done so often this season, though, the Jackals dug in their heels and started to fight back. In his ECHL debut, Tyler Noseworthy used a hard-working forecheck to knock a Titans defense off the puck and feed Matt Carter in front for his first goal as a Jackal. Kyle Bushee then got in on the act by finishing off a power play goal at 17:24, just 1:20 after Carter's goal, to draw the Jackals even heading into the third.
Clermont saved some of his best work for the final frame as he was faced with 13 shots while the Jackals managed only five against Wedgewood. Despite the low total, Elmira went ahead 4-2 on Jordan Pietrus' shorthanded strike at 12:40. The lead couldn't stay, though, as a defensive zone turnover led to Zajac's second goal of the game 2:28 later. Elmira survived a big push from Trenton over the final few minutes to preserve the tie and send it to overtime.
The extra session was evenly played with the Titans managing five shots to the Jackals' four, but the goalies stood tall by stopping every attempt. The shootout was anything but even, however, as Clermont stopped each of the Titans' four shooters while Carter and Pietrus scored to give Elmira the win.
Clermont collected his 14th win of the season by stopping 34 of 38 through overtime and all four of Trenton's shootout attempts. The Jackals finished the night 2-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
