TinCaps Win Series Finale at Bowling Green
April 25, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Bowling Green, KY -- A three-run first inning proved to be enough for the TinCaps in a 3-2 victory at the Hot Rods on Wednesday night. Starting pitcher Walker Weickel, along with relievers John Hussey, Chris Nunn, and Roman Madrid, helped Fort Wayne win on the road for the first time in eight tries.
Bowling Green (14-5) starter Blake Snell retired the first two batters of the game before running into trouble. Snell (1-2) walked Jeremy Baltz and Diego Goris. Gabriel Quintana followed with a double to right field that scored Baltz for the game's first run and moved Goris to third. Then with Luis Tejada batting, Hot Rods catcher Justin O'Conner allowed a passed ball, enabling Goris to come home and Quintana to advance to third. After Tejada walked, Corey Adamson added an RBI-infield single to give the TinCaps a 3-0 lead.
After surrendering 22 runs combined in the first two games of the series, three runs were enough for Fort Wayne's pitching to protect in the series finale. Weickel went the first three-and-one-thirds innings, as he allowed two runs -- one earned -- on two hits. The 19-year old right-hander struck out four batters, though he also walked four.
Hussey (2-0), the righty reliever from Australia, replaced Weickel in the fourth inning with one out and a runner at third base, but eluded further damage. Hussey tossed three-and-two-thirds, giving up just one hit and one walk to win for the second time in four games.
Nunn pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn his first hold of the season before handing the ball over to Madrid, one batter into in the ninth. Fort Wayne's closer kept his ERA at 0.00 in eight appearances and picked up his fourth save of the year.
The TinCaps return home to host the Kane County Cougars at Parkview Field on Thursday night at 7:05. The game can be seen on XFINITY Channel 81 heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
