Peoria Chiefs News Release

Dayton, OH - A five-run bottom of the third inning did in the Peoria Chiefs on Thursday night as they dropped the opener of a three-game series to the Dayton Dragons 11-5. The loss drops the Chiefs to 8-9 on the season with five games remaining on the roadtrip.

Beau Amaral started the Dragons offense with a single against Joe Cuda to lead off the bottom of the first. Zach Vincej followed with a single and with runners on the corners he stole second to put two in scoring position. Jeff Gelalich delivered a sacrifice fly to center to put the Dragons on top 1-0 before Cuda struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Chiefs had a chance in the third with two on and two out by Jeff Winker's diving catch in left-center robbed Jacob Wilson of extra bases. The Dragons added on in the bottom of the inning as Amaral hit a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead. With one out Gelalich singled and stole second before scoring on a double by Winker. With two down Junior Arias singled in Winker and stole two bases. Following a walk, Robert Ramirez singled in Arias to put the Dragons on top 6-0.

Dayton kept the offense going in the fourth as Amaral led off with his third hit in as many at-bats. Vincej singled to left and Gelalich delivered his second sacrifice fly of the night for a 7-0 lead. Seth Mejias-Brean doubled to left as Vincej scored easily to put the hosts on top 8-0.

The Chiefs finally got on the board in the fifth against Sal Romero. Carson Kelly and Charlie Tilson started the frame with a pair of infield singles and moved up 90 feet on a groundout. CJ McElroy drove in Kelly with an infield single to cut the Dayton lead to 8-1. In the top of the seventh the Chiefs added a run against Joel Bender. Kelly doubled to right and scored on a line drive single to center by Tilson.

The two teams traded runs late as the Dragons put three on the board against reliever Dixon Llorens in the seventh. Peoria answered those three in the top of the eighth but that's as close as the visitors would get. Alex Mejia started the eighth with a walk and scored easily on a double off the wall by Wilson. Patrick Wisdom launched his league-best fifth homer of the season off the left-field concession stand for the final runs of the game and an 11-5 Dayton lead.

Cuda (1-1) allowed eight runs on 11 hits over four innings while walking one and striking out six. Joe Donofrio threw two perfect innings and struck out one. Llorens allowed three runs on three hits and a walk over 2/3 of an inning and Michael Aldrete threw 1 1/3 hitless innings with one strikeout.
