Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Strong pitching and six extra-base hits led the Lansing Lugnuts (7-10) to a 6-2 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits (11-7) at Modern Woodmen Park on Thursday night.
Carlos Ramirez and Chris Hawkins homered for Lansing in the second and seventh innings respectively, giving the Lugnuts a 2-1 lead entering the eighth.
The Lugs added plenty of insurance in the eighth thanks to four doubles off the bats of Dalton Pompey, Jorge Flores, Ramirez and Shane Opitz, stretching the lead to 6-1.
The River Bandits' only run came in the bottom of the fifth inning against Lansing starter Roberto Osuna. After Ryan Dineen reached on a dropped-third strike, he stole second base and then came around to score on back-to-back wild pitches by Osuna.
Though Osuna received a no-decision, the 18-year-old prospect shined. He allowed just a single run on one lone River Bandits' hit (a bunt single) in five innings, striking out eight while walking one. His four wild pitches in the game also tied a franchise record set by Eddy Diaz in 2001.
Arik Sikula (Win, 1-0) got the win in relief for Lansing, striking out three in two innings of scoreless relief.
For Quad Cities, Brian Holmes (Loss, 1-2) allowed three runs in two innings of relief of starter Jordan Jankowski, taking his second loss on the season. Jankowski allowed one run on six hits in five innings.
Astros top prospect Carlos Correa, the Bandits' starting shortstop, struck out four times in five hitless at-bats.
The Lugnuts look to take the series by sending southpaw Daniel Norris (0-1, 12.00) to the mound against River Bandits' right-hander Vincent Velasquez (1-0, 1.50) in game two on Friday night. First pitch is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
